I've been looking for a gift guitar in the vein of a Les Paul. Reviews keep pointing to the Larry Carlton L7 or the Epiphone Les Paul.(beginner player)

Anyone have experience with either of these? They're both at the top of my budget for this high schoolers gift.

Thank You!

All of the Sire LC models are highly rated here in the UK. Only ever heard good things about them. I am yet to have one in the workshop but I am tempted to buy one...

That Goldtop one in the video retails at £499 GBP: For my American friends, that's around $630 US. It's my experience, most new budget guitars need some fret work out of the box (unfortunately) but for me, that's not a problem. Maybe factor the price of a fret level in if you do buy one! No brainer if you get a good one though...

I've gotten a couple of the import PRS Guitars and they fretwork has been great.  Even sitting out in my dry house, no sprout.

I do my own fret work so no problem there.

Keep your thoughts coming folks :)

The PRS SE models I looked at where of high quality. But out of my budget range :(

Less than $350 shipped and with a gig bag. I have the HB Gotoh SG version and it sounds great.

I know they get slagged here but a lot of the Epiphones I've picked up in the last 6-8 years have been very good.

I'd be most interested in the Sire L7V

with P-90's

even if the GoldTop doesn't look as nice as the Hamer GoldTop models.

Every Harley Benton I have had in my shop has needed a complete fret reseat or fret level. One I had in had all of the lacquer come off the neck/fretboard when I removed the tape. They look great but in my experience, that is all. I would never buy one. My budget guitar of choice has always been a Squier Classic Vibe or a Vintage (John Hoirnby Skewes / JHS). Best budgets I have owned by far. My 2 best ever budget guitars are my Squier 50's Telecaster Classic Vibe and my 2005 Epiphone G400 SH [with binding]: I actually gig with the Epi SG...
