years ago, that was listed here for maybe $700, and probably lasted a week, it

just kind of drifted to the next page, before I snagged it. I had sold it to Frankie,

then bought it back from him, then had to raise funds to buy a condo in 03 and

it went on ebay for $1100 or so. Thought I had hit the jackpot. haven't seen it since.

but yeah, that thing was super-rare and flamey from all angles. I'm not suprised

that someone thought it was worth that

I had a Koa Studio and it was a fine guitar. I didn't care much for the Wraptail but I should have tried more pickup combinations in it. Needed Alnico 5's for sure. Koa has the looks of Maple but sounds more like Mahogany.

Um, a Koa Topped ,Chambered, Phantom Custom, now that would be cool.

Koa has been known in the past (incorrectly) as 'Hawaiian mahogany', though it's a acacia tree:

I've had three Carvin all-Koa basses in the past, the sound of those (acoustically and plugged in,even with the stock crap Carvin electronics) was close to mahogany but with a bit more midrange, IMO. Figured wood/flame is common in Koa, though not always (two of the three Carvin Koa basses I had, had not much flame at all, and it sure wasn't consistent as far as figure was concerned), and it's difficult to find a large flat chunk of Koa that's flamey AND has a relatively straight grain. From what I could find online, density is similar to walnut or black walnut. Koa has flame figure similar to maple, but that's about the only actual resemblance it has to any maple as far as I can see or hear.

Koa thick enough to do a Hamer Top is hard to come by with any amount of flame. Flamey Koa like that one is near impossible to get nowadays.

Sorry, no way that is worth as much as your average beat to shit Gibson LP Classic. It might be worth $500 here, but more likely to get lowballed out for $350.

Ummmm, what?

I would hope that was the reaction he was going for.

All good things come to those who wait (or sumpin' like that).

Ya, that was my "Hey look over there" post. I bought the guitar, worked all day, stopped my the Post Office and mailed Mitch his check. Thats how it went down. Server Fund will be paid shortly and the bet is over and done.

I've said this to Mitch, I went down to play a guitar the other day because I was feeling stressed and grabbed a case and amp out of storage and realize I only have 3 cases in the house. My majic number is 6 guitars. So unless something really jumps up and bites me it will be tough to fill that last slot.
