  1. Wowzers! (Still) pleasantly surprised at the amount of talent and some of the really pro sounding tracks on this comp. The guitar tones were really good and there were some real strong song writing efforts. I just wanna know how guitarzandstuff revived Tom Petty to sing on Initial Kick.
  2. A few weeks back, I came up with some riffs for a new tune that ended up channeling some serious Jerry Cantrell/AIC. I initially named it Smack Talk in reference to Lane Staley's struggle with heroin addiction and the theme of numerous AIC songs. But as I have no real personal understanding of or connection to that lifestyle, I decided to change it to A Year (I'll Never Get Back) referencing 2020. But then I started thinking that while 2020 sucked for a lot of people and it definitely had it's horrific points, it wasn't really that bad for me. Kinda contrived. Bah! Again, back to the song title drawing board. All the while, I was constantly revisiting and revising the riffs and parts. Each time I dug into a section, I'd find myself sucked into a bottomless hole where time evaporated. A quarter hour might as well have been a full hour. Every freakin' time I visited the song I'd lose another couple of hours. It was the musical equivalent falling into the rabbit hole. You know, the one in the Alice In (Chains) Wonderland? Now, the song's called Rabbit Hole. God, I suck at this.
  3. Sadly, the ratio of digit speed and dexterity to guitar gimmicks and parlor tricks is inverse, in the time line of technique for this player. I never really was fast or nimble.
  4. So... what does it mean when you come up with solos you have great difficulty playing; when your brain is writing a check that your fingers can't cash?
  5. One of the best feelings in the world: reclaiming a guitar you left over at a band mates at the onset of pandemic 5 months ago and having it play fantastically; even seemingly imbuing you with guitar god-like prowess for the session. All kidding aside, it was awesome and I did play better for the 20 minutes I used it. Good to have it home. Look forward to being able to take to back and actually use it in rehearsal with my band mates.
  6. Well, I do have a couple of Burrito guitars, though they're not quite so literal.
  7. It's difficult to describe the level of elation and relief at being able to play guitar without pain or stiffness associated with medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow). So, let's go with: I'm f-ing thrilled! Been months now. Maybe some day a bit more of what little speed i had previously will return as well.
  8. Hey! Someone's been reading my old notepads of song lyrics!!!
  9. Satchel knows- Plays like butter! https://www.facebook.com/bob.cavanaugh2/videos/10216591705376242/
  10. A guitarist's paradox: to be of unremarkable and mediocre talent/ability but have preferences in gear of such specificity and exacting standards as to rival the greats of our time.
  11. Does it mean you've arrived at a certain state of zen when you can get to that magical place on just about any of your axes?
  12. Don'tcha hate it when imagination and and ambition outpace ability? ๐Ÿ˜‘
  13. When considering my guitar playing progress through the filter of: your only competition should be with yourself, i.e. bettering yourself, I'm doing pretty darn good. Truth is, once I step away from the "I'll never sound/play like so and so," I tend to thoroughly enjoy my playing.
  14. I'm posting this with a heavy heart...๐Ÿ˜” As much as I love my Guitars and Amps and playing thru different gear, it takes up too much of my time. Iโ€™m struggling to keep up with the everyday basics like cleaning and maintaining the house, etc. Something has to give. Iโ€™m selling my collection. Below is a list of what's available. All have been maintained, and are in great condition Make me a reasonable offer. 1. Dustpan and brush 2. Sponges 3. Dusters 4. Mop and bucket 5. Window cleaner 6. Vacuum 7. Dishwashing liquid 8. Laundry detergent 9. Fabric softener 10. Laundry baskets 11. Toilet brush 12. Cleaning sprays 13. Scrubbing brushes
  15. I'll be damned. Practicing your ass off tends to improve your playing. Who'd've thunk it?
  16. The satisfaction derived from performing someone elseโ€™s music, even flawlessly, will always be slightly less than writing and performing your own. - Saul A. Terry
  17. Serendipity- disassembling a Cali(ablo) for the new paint service that you managed to snag at a discount rate, only to find the bridge p'up is a highly sought-after JBJ! Gonna go play the lottery now... ๐Ÿ˜‚
  18. Understandable. Really digging the 2018 MIM DK24's and the older San Dimas and Pro Mods are even better.
  19. For the record, EH's Synth9 and B9 pedals f*cking ROCK! Whole new sonic world has opened up and my songwriting is re-inspired!
  20. I'd say you might be onto something... something I hope I can side step in the years to come. I learned today of the potential impending demise of my cover band which has been running since 2010. Faced with no gigs, I wonder how I will deal with the GAS and the revolving door of axes that it oft creates.
  21. I encountered one of the best feelings this morning when every guitar I picked up sounded good. Mind you, I didn't say, were played good <well>, I said. "sounded good." I picked up no less than 6 different axes from Charvels & Jacksons to Hamers. All sounded pretty damned good. That's something of an anomaly. Usually, in a multi-guitar jam session, one will standout to my ears as most pleasing. The rest: irritating or frustratingly meh.
  22. Ouch. Agree that's there's no substitute for performing live. For years my wife has suggested that my buying guitars was an effort to fill some other hole in my life/soul. Ironically and at the risk of being crude, my taking up guitar was, in part, an attempt to find more hole to fill in my own special way.
  23. I've arrived at what I feel is a reasonable criteria for limiting and simultaneously validating GAS. Being in a gigging band is justification for acquiring guitars, ergo, the cessation of said gigs or the band altogether means no more guitars may be bought without sell/trading one already in the herd. In the case of the complete dissolving of all musical endeavors (outside of bedroom variety) the herd must be thinned. Them's the rulez.
