  1. REPORT: SYLVANIA 6V6GT NOS 1960's. Green ink. Smoked glass. Black plates. These are a whole new kind of awesome in the Tweaker They seem more "cultured" in their sound, smoother than the Tung Sol reissues. The Sylvanias have a quality of "big shoulders" which is surprising coming from the little Tweaker. There is no graininess or fizz at all. I would rate them as an incredible value at $24 for the pair. With the wife at home tonight, I have not tried them with the power section cranked. Next time I have a dollar or two to spare, I will try some NOS cryo treated tubes! morningstar
  2. Thanks Poe. Will "AVOID" metal tubes. morningstar
  3. OPINIONS ON TUBES WITH "METAL" ENVELOPES (NOT GLASS)???? They seem cool but how do they perform in guitar amplifiers? thanks morningstar
  4. Thanks Poe. You were right. Time and lot of "tweaking" made the whole thing sound much better than any amp I have owned before. Those crazy Metal Muff pedals are pretty extreme. I am using very small amounts of distortion and top boost, and had to back off the treble below noon. i guess I am not used to devices with switches and knobs that actually DO something. I will report on the Sylvanias. Ta da! morningstar
  5. EDIT TO ADD: This tone report is erroneous and obsolete. I got all the knobs and switches lined up a voila! The amp is in a whole new universe and the Metal Muff can be restrained and sound good. As somebody here once said "99 percent of all tone problems are really EQ problems". He was right. * tmm* ----- TONE REPORT ----- I installed a NOS JAN Phillips ECG 12AT7WXC in the phase inverter position. The stocker was a SovTek 12AT7 I installed Reissue Tung Sol 12AX7's I installed Reissue Tung Sol 6V6GT's Overall the sound comes off much harder or colder than the stock Ruby Chinese tubes. I kicked in my newish Metal Muff and the sound was pretty damn stiff and could not be adjusted to an acceptable tone. Of course the Metal Muff is designed to produce NuMetal thrashem and trashem "metal". I might sell it as I am a "prog" guy. ----- NEXT REPORT ----- I will first go back to stock power tubes and replacement preamp tubes and report. I am going back to the stock preamp and replacement 6V6 and will report. I have a set of NOS Sylvania 6V6GT coming. I will report on them too; both with stock and new preamp tubes. Rawk morningstar
  6. Thanks guys. That's a ton of great information. I bought a matched pair of the Tung Sols. At this point they are backup just in case the 6V6 in the yet-to-arrive Egnater Tweaker head are nasty. Thanks Jimbilly. I will get my butt to the PS Organ store and pick up some cool older NOS or pull tubes. I also have GT EL34s and Winged C Svetlana 6L6s to try out in the Tweaker... apparently, one can swap tubes without any adjustment in the little thing. I have a couple dozen 12AX7's of varying vintages to try. I still like the EH 12ax7 as much as NOS Sylvania. The best preamp tube I ever had was a Radio Shack International Servicemaster gold pin 7025. One change at a time! morningstar
  7. Anybody got an opinion of whether the current 6V6GT keeps up with the NOS? If NOS is better can a bar full of drunks tell the difference? Thanks morningstar
  8. Looks great Al. Runs fast and simple. morningstar
  9. I learn something every time I check in here! It is the only Hamer Schaller Floyd I ever saw with a thread in trem arm. I suppose anybody could change the base nut if they wanted. morningstar
  10. Sure. is there anything in particular you want to see super duper close? email me at hamernut at yahoo dot com and I will send you the full size 12 Megapixel pics of whatever you want shot. morningstar
  11. Stu T Davis was an HFC member from very nearly the beginning. I think he was already here when I joined in 1998. Stu was one of the best players I ever saw of old style Metallica/Anthrax/Megadeth and such; but would not play in public. Tragically, Stu beat cancer a couple times but was killed when his Focus Wagon was rear ended by a bus when Stu stopped for traffic on his first day to go back to work after recovery. Stu was a hard core tinkerer. He built the Frankencali from parts, Cali Body, Chapparal neck (broken and repaired 3 times!), and various on-board circuit boards. Lots of pickups have been on and off the Frankencali. Stu added the third knob with the Marshall top. I don't know what it does, but the underlying process is exceptionally heavy sounding. It's perfect for old style thrash. Stu was big on EMG sweepable mid range controls. Ideas? The HR Giger (sp?) stuff on the top is a decal under a clear coat. Stu made the decal and mounted it up. Lee Garver at GMW Guitars clear coated it. GMW also arranged for the Alien Head Inlays. Stu left it to me, and I will keep and defend it. If I croak I will make sure some other old-timer at HFC becomes the Keeper of the Frankencali. morningstar
  12. Yep - You are right. The board is EBONY and the fret shadow is even less than I thought. I really never got around to playing the guitar. Thankee morningstar
  13. WTB SD JB Jr Hot Rails Maybe a single size P90 if there are any. Advice? morningstar
  14. Rechts was hilarious. Not much fun if he got on your six with figurative 37mm cannon, but funny always. He could take it OK; all those pics of his NAMM show head pic photo-shopped onto all sorts of silly stuff are a good example. He was a good guy personally, and pretty damn bright. Last I knew he was on a project to unify the data base systems of all California courts. That's like trying to make sense of an inconsistent bird's nest of labyrinthine gobblygoop. Not something I'd be willing to take on. Oedipus Rechts. I missed Billy Wong by a couple weeks. I never did get to see any of that tomfoolery. morningstar
  15. In 1998 I got a 1996 Hamer USA Daytona NOS from defunct dealer (got it from Kit when he worked at GC before he hit the road). It was emerald transparent. No pics on this computer... morningstar
  16. That IS funny. morningstar
  17. Our deepest condolences. Peace be with you, morningstar

  19. Move on. There are a lot of people out there who are serious. New Hampshire, eh? Carlton Chase is in your neighborhood. This is his modeler tones forum http://carltonec.com/wowbb/ Carlton's a whiz with all sorts of musical stuff. He's a Rycher too. tata morningstar
  20. I can not picture not using my pinky. I bend pretty hard with it, but wide controlled rate "Schenker" vibrato is not happening with a pinky. I got short thick cigar fingers, maybe that helps (or necessitates) using the pinky. You guys with Buckethead length tentacle fingers can probably accomplish great feats of three fingered dexterity. git loud morningstar
  21. I showed up May of 1998, right after I bought my first Daytona from Kit in CA. Emerald trans is still my favorite Hamer color. morningstar
  22. It says. 12AX7WA. My bad. I am very aware of the Euro naming of tubes. It is silkscreened 7025 below the 12AX7WA. Thanks for the answers morningstar
