Had a great time on the phone with Paul Hamer today.

Hi Paul-Nice to "meet" you! Seeing McCartney tomorrow. -
Just give him a chance to grow.

Yeah! WTF!

El, I was attempting to answer holLoWskull's question as to why Hamer's "frugal" models did not sell. Gotcha. Not hating, just don't like USM heads, but typically don't mind (any) Hamer heads, except for the paddle on 8's/12's. Actually think one of the coolest Hamer head/body combos is Standard bass/Cruise head like SirD's Korina. What was up with Daytona's and T51's being so heavy?

http://www.usmasters.com/under1000.htm THAT'S what I'm talking about! 1: Ugly headstocks do not help selling tons of guitars Are we talking about Hamer or US Masters?
-
I spoke with FU back when the change was fresh and proposed a lower "street" (down from 20% to 30% off list-a number dealers could actually sell for and still make $) and a stripped down model that would street for, wait for it, $2010! Get it? He thought it was a good call but they'd have to hone in on a future direction/line re-launch before releasing any "new" models.

I agree it's expensive, but it's been that price for years. And we ALL know we're talking list price here, and end customer price is generally substantially less, right? Edited to add, I'm curious what the "norm" is for bound f-holes as a build option out there.

Guess I should stick to communicating quotes via e-mail. For the record, discussion, or ridicule, this is what we're talking about. Newport $3825 Earthen maple top $580 Jazzburst n/c Headstock overlay to match body top $300 +/- Cream single ply binding $100 bound f-holes $275 per f hole no neck and headstock binding $150 credit Ebony board $150 dots n/c Bigsby trem n/c Kluson style tuners $135 Rio's at least $75 per, likely more Jay, I remember Satin coming up at one point, when you where talking about how streaked, aged, spalted and old you wanted it to look, but I'm old and deaf, so who knows. Judge price as you wish, I think they're expensive too, but bling 'aint cheap (even bling to look unblinged) and to me this is a pretty tricked out guitar. Maybe this is a cheaper route to that end: Newport Spalted body top Satin Delete all binding Happy hunting!

I recently had a custom order spec'd out and priced for a Newport that by 'n large was not all that tricked out. Fancy top, some binding etc, otherwise fairly routine. My price, after a generous discount was still over 4k. With prices like this, combined with a virtual flood of used used Hamers at pennies on the dollar, Hamer will never see my new biz dollars again. You see I took that 4k and began shopping around to see what else is out there, turns out there's a hell of a lot out there for those prices, like I dunno FOUR Newports. Bottom line for me, Hamer is good, but they are absolutely NOT 7k msrp good. My gut feeling is that they know this to, and the days are numbered. Buy used now, while you still can. I don't know dude, Earthen top, change binding, bound f-holes, matching headstock overlay/color, Rio's, Ebony board, tuner change, satin finish, etc. is pretty tricked out. Just sayin'.

Frank U. said that the same guys who worked on Hamers before are still doing it, they're just tasked to work on different lines depending on the day. I don't know that MS "isn't @ Hamer anymore", exclusively, and there could be pics of all those guys working on Guilds, Ovations or Hamers. If Mike or Mike via Jol told you this directly, then that's different, but there you go. Great pic MJ. I want a Guild!

ZZ Top producer/engineer Terry Manning

So, if I found some early ZZ on vinyl I'd be in business. -

I've always been a bit of a ZZ hater, even leaving during their first song when Sammy Hagar opened. In the last couple of years, I've become curious about old ZZ, having heard a deep track every now and then through the years. Well, I bought the Double Down DVD recently, and I gotta say, that 1980 show KICKS MY ASS! I "get" them now. That Just Got Paid, Manic Mechanic shit is the fucking bomb. ZZ Top, do you forgive me? -
Oops! Forgot about Dre (Steve). Cheers!

Jol speaks via the song on his Guru Blog. A Judas Priest classic. Guess before you check it out. Pretty damn humurous of the man, I'd say.
-
First of all, Jol, if you're reading, thanks and best to you. It's a shocking and sad day for us here at the store. Spoke with some other folks in both the office and factory today. Nuts and bolts are as follows: The guys in the shop continue to work on all 3 brands made in New Hartford. Hamer the brand continues under FMIC. Obviously there are more questions than answers right now. While everyone I spoke with continues to do their job, they're all sad to see Jol go.

So, time to write Hamer's obituary?
elduave replied to zorrow's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
And equally tedious! Sounds to me like you'd be equally tweaked whether they "told you to your face" or not! We all (myself included) take this shit WAY too seriously sometimes. Not really tweaked, just I prefer to know what the rules are and then I can decide if I want to play the game or not. I dont mind the seriousness of it all, it is our hard earned dollar at play here, as customers shouldnt we have the right to at least ask? I am just still trying to justify my Hamer infatuation (ok, again, maybe be declining to just a crush). Noted. You do have the right to ask for anything though! -

A list exists, it's officialness is subject to "the wind" as it's a company only document, and one of the reasons for that is due to the length of the list (pages, and pages, and pages, and pages...). What is this, 1972? It doesn't matter how many pages it is, I'm sure that 'list' is in electronic form, and could be edited and sent out fresh to their dealers every day if it changed that often. From what I've read, even the folks here (who are here because they love these guitars), are frustrated that they can't get a straight answer on what's available or they get a "no" when someone else gets a "yes" for the same thing. It behooves Hamer to be a little more customer-oriented if they want, uh... customers! That one little improvement would seem to be a no-brainer and good for business. I think it's more the minutia of the list, and no, they wouldn't "change the list" that often (and couldn't daily update if they did). I do acknowledge and sympathize with some of what you say, though. -
