Student with crushed guitar...
moozak replied to geoff_hartwell's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
what the hell, he sounds like a good kid... i just sent you $50. tell Paulie to keep on playing! hopefully, "the bully" kid will grow up to be a big fat grease ball with a chest full of heart stents when he's about 35 years old... that will give him some time to pause and reflect back on his life of being a TOTAL DICK. -

i bought Fandango on a whim back around 75 (or so?)... i was absolutely floored when i heard it... still am when i listen to it. in fact, to this day, nothing gets me going like listening to Thunderbird. if you "started" with Eliminator... do yourself a big favor and work your way back to Fandango and Tres Hombres and even their First Album... you'll be amazed... not only by the great music and their amazing tones - but in their transformation over the years. -
Guitar you didn't buy and still kicking yourself...

pick only 1? that's easy for me... in 1985 i was fresh out of college and my son was just 5 years old and i had a chance to buy a 59 Les Paul that was then just 26 years old (like myself). and folks, let me tell you... this thing was almost MINT... nicely faded to a burnt orange, just beautiful... price? well, what was THEN a whopping price of $8,500. i chose not to do it... i was a single parent at the time and that was a lot of money to spend (though i had the money)... but i felt like i really shouldn't spend that sort of coin when i had a young son to raise. kicked myself many times over that one... need i say more? but... who knew? -
wow... good initial review! i can't wait to hear more about it (and see pics of course!) thanks!

you'll probably be surprised at how well the wrap tail works... i am meticulous as well and i like 'em!... and keep in mind that Jon Herrington has a Tally Pro with a wrap tail as well. there's one little catch that i learned with wrap tails though... and you might want to be aware of it. if you put the string in (where the ball end seats into the bridge) and then wrap it over the top of the bridge... you'll notice that the string twist (the part that twisted around the ball end) sits near or on top of the crown of the bridge. this causes weird string sounds and tuning issues because the string needs to break cleanly over the crown. SO... here's a trick that i've done for a long time with wrap tails: cut the ball ends off and old set of strings and and save them. then, thread your new strings thru them... using them as spacers (one for each string is all you need). this will allow the ball end of the string to stick out a little from the base of the bridge just a bit allowing you to wrap the string cleanly over the top of the bridge without getting into the twisted part of the string. now the string itself - not the twisted part - will have a nice clean break over the crown of the bridge. this will really help. it's an old trick that a lot of wrap tail players do (or used to do years ago... hey, i'm an old guy ok? lol) other than that... the wrap tail intonates surprisingly well and also has a certain tone to it that is just killer! i'm sure you'll like it! once you get used to a wrap tail, they're really solid and very reliable. just restring and go... nothing moves (just make sure you change one string at a time so you can keep it in place). oh... one more tip... if you have to intonate just a bit... remember TAKE PRESSURE OFF THE STRINGS before you turn the screw to the right (which pushes the bridge outward away from the post). if you don't you can strip the screw as you're pushing against a lot of tension with the strings tuned up. of course, going the opposite way (turning the screw inward) is not as big of a deal because it's relaxing the tension. hope these tips help you a bit... trust me, you'll like the wrap tail... just give it some time ok? don't make any adjustments for a while - just play it and get used to the feel of it. good luck with your new Tally Pro and post pics when you get it! take care! ...jr

i've never loaned a guitar to a friend... and never will. i paid too much for them and i'm very picky about them as well. if they want a guitar... they can get their own.

i "used" to own this one:

here's my Redwood Ltd: here's some up-close detail: here's my Triple Threat... it has been used on page 18 of their catalog for the past several years. I LOVE this guitar... big beefy neck too!

thought i'd keep this going, in case anyone's interested... here's another pretty good Tally clip with some fairly spanky cleans (i like this clip)...
-
thanks... i've listened to that clip quite a bit... and though, it's a good clip and shows a lot of Tally tones, "to me" i really didn't get a "tele" feel out of it at all. this is basically what started me on my quest to see if it could indeed sound like a tele... or tele like. which i feel that matt did accomplish in his clip (in my last post).
-
lol... yeah, you've got a point there! i've heard a lot of nice Tally stuff... but this was just what i was looking for. i wanted to hear that Tele type bite and he really nailed it on that clip. we all know what the Talladega can do when distorted and even pushed hard... there's quite a few clips out there... but it's really nice to hear the clean stuff like this - to get a complete picture of the full range of the Tally... you know? i'll keep looking and hopefully i can find more of the cleaner clips like this.
-
here's a great clip... it's Matt Smith and the NY Monstas... and he's using a Tally! this is just the kind of stuff i've been looking for... he's using it like a clean Tele and it sounds great. check it out around 2:05 or so... this is great!

well, haven't heard anything from anyone yet... but i did find a "few" clips on youtube of Kal David and his Tally... i'd still like to hear some more "clean" samples like this... but nonetheless... here they are: it's cool to hear the Tally really clean like this - in it's natural state without any overdrive or distortion to color it. anyone else found anything yet?
-
thanks! i feel better now that someone knows where i'm coming from. hope you get to lay some "tones" down soon! and yes... i've seen pics of the Tally that Arnie has... very sweet indeed!
-
i think you're misunderstanding me... i DO think it's a kick-ass guitar... i have one on order. i'm not expecting the Tally to BE a Tele... i just want to know how close it gets... as that's the only sound sample i haven't heard anywhere yet.
-
thanks... i've heard those. honestly i didn't hear a lot of "T" type tones in there. so, this is why i'm asking. granted... i really like the guitar and the tones i've heard so far... and, on a whim, i even have one on order.... but i would like to hear if it does the quacky chicken-picken sort of thing. to my ears... i just haven't heard a good clip of that yet. (am i making any sense? i may not be describing this well)
-
anyone?
-
i've seen all the Tally clips out there... and... quite honestly... most of them are simply distorted - albeit good - tones. BUT... i'd like to here some samples of trying to capitalize on any "Tele" like tones the Tally might have. i'm wanting to hear the true range of tones from this guitar... and from all the clips i've heard so far... i haven't really heard - what i would call - the Tele side... you know... that spanky in-between pickups thing. anyone out there with a Tally... can you cook up some clips of Tele-like runs for me? (if, the guitar is capable of that... which i'm hoping so).

here's the back of my Studio Custom Redwood LTD... it's not the best pic to show the belly cut... but it does have one: ...and while i'm at it: here's a pair of Triple Threats

i was never in the military... but 2 of my brothers were. both volunteered for TWO tours in vietnam... both have purple hearts and one was shot down twice behind enemy lines in a huey (he flew MedEvac) and has a distinguished flying cross... and both spent over 20 years in the service and are now retired. my uncle (long gone now) was a survivor of the bataan death march... and i also have several uncles who were in the korean conflict. so... even though i was never in the military... i am a patriot!
