Judging by the general abuse and neglect shown in those stellar photos.....I think what happened is, a gorilla of a guitarist slammed the toggle right through the top wood and bought a pickguard, drilled a hole in it  for the toggle, and viola!

Wouldn't that still be there?

I thought the black ones (Pepper) still had a flame top just like a darkburst, Sunburst, Greenburst and White (Salt)

Seems it was just an Explorer build not a bound top.

You could also order a solid mahogany Standard back then (4-digit era) - no bound veneer top.  I've got one and can name at least 8-9 others like that!

 One of the ones I'm talking about (4-digits) did.  Pretty certain that's an aftermarket mod.
