0 diablo175 Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 Are the tuners original, Hamer stamped? Never seen the white pegs on black tuning machines. Quote

Tim The pictures aren't great but it looks to me like the body's original finish was removed at some point. If so that's not exactly excellent condition. 5 1 Quote
0 Tim Byrne Posted July 24, 2025 Author Posted July 24, 2025 (edited) Hamer made several guitars with a Matte or Satin finish with natural wood look. It has Never been stripped nor any gloss removed. I've had it since 1993. Edited July 24, 2025 by Tim Byrne Quote
0 cmatthes Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 A shot of the open control cavity would probably settle that. A.I. is honestly near worthless. 4 1 1 Quote

Hamer did do some plain clear finishes over figured maple but I don't recall ever seeing any mahogany bodied shredders with a factory clear only finish. I have however encountered several shredder era Hamers where former owners stripped the OEM finish and gave it a DIY New Yankee Workshop style Minwax clear. I tried zooming in on the pics you posted to get a better look but they're pretty compressed/fuzzy so I can't really get a good look. 1 Quote
0 velorush Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 Say it has been stripped - what a perfect guitar to buy and send straight to @Stike! Possibilities are endless and absolutely without regret! 4 Quote
0 Tim Byrne Posted July 25, 2025 Author Posted July 25, 2025 I see the same stain under the springs. Im not sure but Ive had it since 1993. Someone would have had to alter or strip it within 3 years. Thanks for everyone"s input. I not a lead guitar player. Im a vocalist and writer and mainly play acoustic on stage. Tim Quote

Tim Seeing these and zooming in I am pretty certain that is not how it left Hamer. The paint in the bottom of the control cavity looks factory and they would not have painted just the cavity gloss black if the guitar was only getting a clear/natural finish. Also what appears to be a lack of pore filler is another sign it was stripped. The finish on the neck looks unbuggered but the body being stripped is going to hurt the resale value unfortunately. 6 Quote
0 Tim Byrne Posted July 25, 2025 Author Posted July 25, 2025 This is an 1986 Chaparral with natural fi ish from factory. Not sure about anything now. Quote
0 cmatthes Posted July 25, 2025 Posted July 25, 2025 It looks like it shipped as a black guitar originally, and was refinned at some point before you got it. I've looked at hundreds of control cavities from that era, and that was definitely a black guitar at one time. 6 Quote
0 Steve Haynie Posted July 26, 2025 Posted July 26, 2025 The factory satin finishes I have seen never had the wood grain surface. They were always flat level surfaces under the satin finish. 1 Quote

Yep and the 86 posted above listed as a factory finish shows no pore filler when you zoom in so I suspect that one was stripped as well. 3 Quote
