I hated playing that song, and usually I hate seeing others play that song.  If the singer cannot nail it, do not even try.  Brent Smith is one of the few people who can pull it off.

I thought it was an Explorer, I've just never seen one appointed like it so thought it may have a different name. Also, it seems more pointed than the ones now. Maybe it just looked better on him. Or, has there been changes in the design over the years?

Quite a few changes actually, just like the Hamers Standard has changed over the years

Rick Medlocke was playing an Ibanez Destroyer in the early 80's.  During his time with Lynyrd Skynyrd he has played a Gibson Explorer.

Ok, so Collins had that Gibson Vibrola installed in a ‘50s Explorer? Junkie’s gon’ junky, ah reckon.

He added it in the 70s, and although a rare guitar, it wasn't worth nearly as much "$3-5K" as it is now... and he played the hell out of it "as a tool" not a collectors piece

Good to know. I knew one of them dudes used a Destroyer. Turns out it was Medlocke. My bad.

Collins used the whammy bar a lot, especially live.  Ed King did as well on his Strat.
