I've had this old 78-80 Charvel made DiMarzio stamped Star and strathead neck that I've been wanting to put together but can't decide a proper era correct finish that would pay proper homage to his legacy

A candy red or Pelham blue would look good with that binding.

Are you going to use one of those locking nut replacements? Or, just install a standard OFR?

I dunno 😕 that's part of my problem, I kinda wanna keep it era specific stock form and also Floyd Rose trems don't play very nicely with 2 3/16th heel width... decisions, decisions 🤔

Maybe then a Brass Factory bridge, and one of those doohickeys that convert an OFR nut shelf to a standard nut?

Yep, that's actually the direction I'm thinking, or maybe a non-fine tuner Floyd?.. Actually, I just need a piece of matching rosewood to make a nut slot

Right. Won’t take much to fill in the missing wood. An NFT OFR would kick ass with locking tuners.

Closest I've ever been to having a Charvel is one of these, Wayne-designed. Interesting guitars.

Looks very much like this:

Not sure how long he lasted there, or if it was just a contract gig, or what the real story was with them. He certainly had a profound effect on the guitar world. 

When I worked in a store here like 25 years ago, we had a 'Wayne' guitar that was covered in a shell material. I remember it being rather cool.

He really did make some interesting guitars in the years after he sold the company to Grove Jackson. I still remember how gutted people were when his home burned in 2018, as it contained a lot of truly unique items, and also probably pretty much meant the end of his guitar building days. When you lose all of your stuff and equipment its hard to start from scratch in your 70s.

Yep, the entire community of Paradise, CA, ceases to exist, thanks to our gas/elec utility, PG&E. They were responsible for two other major wildfires that year. Fuck them.

From his son Michael:

As many of you already know, my father, Wayne R. Charvel, passed away peacefully on Sunday.
My father was unexpectedly rushed to the emergency room. It was completely unexpected, and everything happened so quickly. I immediately flew to Arizona to be with him, and our family was by his side. On Sunday morning, while I was holding his hand, my dad peacefully went home to be with the Lord.
It still doesn't seem real.
Many of you knew him as a legendary guitar builder, craftsman, and musician. I was blessed to simply call him Dad. Of everything he accomplished in his life, what meant the most to me was that he was a loving father.
Our only focus was spending every possible moment with him and supporting one another as a family. Because of that, we weren't able to let everyone know right away, and I apologize for the delay.
Thank you to everyone who has called, texted, emailed, and shared your prayers and kind words. They have meant more than you know. I may not be able to respond to every message for a while, but please know that I truly appreciate each and every one of them.
Please continue to keep my mom, our family, and everyone whose lives Dad touched in your prayers.
Rest in peace, Dad. I love you, and I will miss you every day.

Thanks for posting that here. I know Michael had been working with him for some years before that fire a couple of years ago.  I hope he'll continue building.

I would go sonic blue nitro.  Or one of the rare occasions black might be cool.   Finish check it…  crème rings and a nice brass Charvel nos style bridge.   Phenolic nut.  That would kick aaashhh.
