hardheartedbill Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Barnes is a great player, but IMO Ed DeGenaro is THE best unkown player around, he also plays a Hamer P-90 special on the occasional blue moon, Ed's really something special
Disturber Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 JackButler' date='Oct 9 2006, 08:46 PM' post='150996'] THAT is the incredible Mr. Larry Mitchell! SUPER player and a really nice human being. Thanks for the enlightenment! I found his webpage. He's got some cool funky chops.http://larrymitchell.com/ BTW also underated is mr Stevie Salas. Ad him to the list.
serial Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 If we were talking OVERrated, I'd probably say (gasp!) Steve Stevens. At least from what I've heard on record, he's good, but not "guitar-god" good, yet he's developed some kind of mythical status. I've wanted to hear really blistering stuff from him (and I've probably heard about 90-95% of his recorded output) and I've just never heard it.
cmatthes Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 James Honeyman-Scott has always been one of my faves. The guy could play the song like few others, but obviously had the stuff to back it up. Ditto on Johnny Marr and Rick Witkowski (CTS) like Serial mentioned.

I think he is a very rhythmic and innovative rhythm player. Not necessarily the hardest licks to play, but he came up with them and they usually suits the songs perfectly. His rhythmstyle is pretty unique. Just as Eddie Van Halen has a great rhythm style. They both are very groovy in their playing style. Something I really appreciate. Most rock, hard rock or metal style players are so static and boring. (These other guys might have"great timing", but If I don't tap my foot then it's just to static. I want to dance baby).
santellavision Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Here's a guitar that I saw in the 70's He was amazing. I went out a picked up their album and it was killer!! They did a great version of ZZTop's 'Chevrolet.'The guys name is Snuffy Walden. He went on to TV scoring and has did 'Thirty Something' 'West Wing' and many others. The bands name was Stray Dog. I have two of their LPs. (I need to transfer them to CD)

Punkavenger Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I dont know how under rated these guys are ...but they were brought up in this thread so I thought I would commentMick Ronson ... Ziggy era Bowie best ever ... and he makes it look so easy!Kirk Kirkwood ... Don't know who he is, but I did mushrooms with Curt Kirkwood and his brother ... goodtimes!Mick Taylor ... The stones albums with M. Taylor are my favorites (Goats heads soup ...kills me!)Lindsey Buckingham ... Was brought kicking and screaming to a Fleetwood Mac concert in the early 80's, Could not believe how good Lindsey wasWino ... pick up some "Spirit Caravan" and "St Vitus" if you have chance (and like the harder stuff)
Philly10 Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Jerry Garcia is the most underrated guitarist of all time. Occaisionally he pops up in one of the guitar mags, but he is rarely thought of as a great guitar player. Which he was. He is often written off as "noodler," but the truth is some of his solos are brilliant, melodic and he can shred when he wants to (in a jazz/country sense of the word). Frank Zappa could also play his arse off when he wanted to, but his personality was never the "guitar hero"+1000 I Miss Jerry
Guest Mike Lee Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Andy Fairweather Low - backup band for Clapton, Roger Waters, and others.Marc Mann - backup band for The Concert for George, not sure what else. And the number one underrated guitarist of all time:Don Felder
