Lindy Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 To all of you veterans of this board, I am brand new "here". Quite frankly, I could really use some help.-Have been looking for a 70's/early 80's Standard for several years, and I still cannot seem to locate one. I have found a number of other guitars the process, however finding a Standard has continued to be nearly impossible. Is there anyone here who might have any suggestions? As I travel, I already have a large number of independent shops, Music-Go-Round's, Guitar Centers, Sam Ash's etc. around the country looking. - Just bought a near mint Special from one of them but again, no Standard.Thank You!
Guest pirateflynn Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Details Nice top on that one and I've heard that it sounds incredible.
cmatthes Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 I already have a large number of independent shops, Music-Go-Round's, Guitar Centers, Sam Ash's etc. around the country looking. That may be part of the problem - those shops (for the most part) can't tell the difference between a 4-digit Standard and an import Sunburst Archtop. There are simply not that many out there - so few were made relative to other guitars of that era. Unmolested examples are also pretty rare, as the 80s were not kind to Standards from the 70s. I've seen more than my share Kahlered, badly Floyded, broken, horribly mutilated, refinned, and stripped of parts over the years. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I ran a monthly ad in Vintage Guitar looking for 'em, and saw only one promising one from that effort. I've owned several over the years, and have lucked out here and there, but as far as a strategy, it's more right place, right time. I snagged a nice one for $499 a few years ago, but that was in a used gear shop that was just trying to move it. That one recently sold for nearly 10 times that, but sadly I was not the seller! There are still some out there, but the competition for them has gotten insane in the last few years. Unfortunately, I no longer can consider myself in the market for one, since prices have gone crazy, and any "real" deals are usually closed before I have a chance to catch them. Any dog I've had in that hunt has pretty much passed on! Have you considered having one custom built? Hamers of today are made even better in many ways than the old ones. Of course, if you are looking for the real thing, there's always organ donation.
serial Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Considering that between December, 1974 and May or so 1985 there were less than 450 made, they arent too plentiful. Also consider that several have been broken and/or Kahlered. Not many complete ones left. I'm down to three, although I've owned as many as ten at a pop. I'm likely out of the market for another one too! They CAN be had and this is the best place to find them, but look to bring yer checkbook for one.
Lindy Posted November 7, 2006 Author Posted November 7, 2006 Thank you for the responses! I really appreciate the help. At least this is more action than I have seen regarding an original Standard since I started looking years ago.If anyone else has one for sale please feel free to message me (or whatever this board considers appropriate). It appears that I may need to pony up for one. Thanks Again.
