Iced Dragon Posted April 20, 2005 Author Posted April 20, 2005 It was actually Michael Fath who got me interested in Hamer guitars... Didn't know the doubleneck was that much of a pain...
BCR Greg Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Tommy Shaw had an identical one except for the rose, and one was pictured in the catalog of the time. Not many out there.
cmatthes Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 The Catalog one was made for Brad Gillis. LEDs and all!
tobereeno Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 jacked up 12 string neck eh? didn't know that - that one is definitely off the future must-buy list.
HamStd Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Tommy Shaw's doubleneck has a different configuration of the pickups (his classic S/S/H cali set up) and the switches. I have seen this one recently, the 12 string neck is just fine on it (The 12 string neck on some doubleneck calis have been problematic for whatever reason) it can probably be obtained, but won't be cheap to get it from him.Peter.
tobereeno Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 (The 12 string neck on some doubleneck calis have been problematic for whatever reason) might have something to do with the fact that Cali 12 string necks are Ibanez wizard thin. Good thing I've heard of this, so far in my experience I've had nothing but amazing playing 12string necks.
HamStd Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Have to agree with you there. Toby knows how to set up a guitar, amen brother!!!!Peter.
darc Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 "He had me sell the thing because it weighed ONE MILLION POUNDS and sounded like crap. The 12 neck was bugaboo as well."Plus someone painted a fugly rose on it. That guitar looks like the bastard child of a shredder that got knocked up back stage at the Grand Ol' Opry.
JohnnyB Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Tommy Shaw had an identical one except for the rose, and one was pictured in the catalog of the time. Not many out there. Ed Roman has one for sale. It can be yours for a measly $7500. http://www.edromanguitars.com/avail/guitar/avail_ham.htm
guitarzandstuff Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 FLAME WAR!I call dibbs on ringside! YES!! I Love a good Flame War on this board...
guitarzandstuff Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I have seen this one recentlyPeter. You don't say... perhaps in your endless vault!! LOL!! <no offense intended Peter>
HamStd Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 You don't say... perhaps in your endless vault!!LOL!!Actually Tommy Shaw still owns the guitar and with a comment like that see if I sell you standard #0003 for $350.00, you can just get in line with everyone else when the asking price will be $39999.99 (original seymour dimarzio pickups and clean fretboard included).....pphttt.Peter.
Tres Aardvarks Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I'm still kicking myself for not grabbing a Cali doubleneck GC had for < $1000. MORON! What was I thinking!?!?! I was going throw a girly cry when Peter posted that pic, but at least he pointed out it isn't his. So, Peter doesn't have ALL the cool toys, but he's got a few
BCR Greg Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Jim O'Connor did the rose on the guitar. He did the majority of the Hamer graphics other than the geometric Specials.

Peter, I was only kidding man...
darc Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 "Jim O'Connor did the rose on the guitar."Yeah, I know, and I'm definitely not dissing O'Connor. His work is great. I just think that rose on that guitar looks goofy. On one of Elvis' acoustics, maybe...
cmatthes Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Not even! Maybe on one of Lisa Marie's...That rose F-s up that whole git-tar.
mc2 Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Hey.....Just to set the record straight on this Michael Fath coubleneck:1) I very recently played it AT Joe's house. I was gone during whatever period Joe, from what I've gathered in this string, was banished to bogieland form the HFC Board...so I don't know or care what happened. But he and his new red Ferrari both struck me as quite personable (in a Joisey sort of way) and I've had nothing but good dealings with him. 2) THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE 12-STRING NECK!!!!!! The axe was set up flawlessly and both necks play great. The axe is also in mint condition...not a single mark on it. Virtually ALL of Joe's axes and gear that I saw were immaculate. Some of the rarest Hamers all in one room...all he sure knows his sh*t as far as doing a nice set-up on an axe or doing pickup/wiring mods. I own a few Hamer 12-string guitars and this one plays as good as any.3) While the rose graphic may not be for everyone, it's a Jim O'Connor original. What I'd never picked up in photos of this axe is that there is actually gold leaf paint in the rose and stem that makes it really jump out in person. Waaaay nicer to see up close.4) As far as the weight of it "weighing a ton"...I guess that depends on your perspective. It's weighs in at 13.5 pounds on a digital scale. I have Hamer B12A single-neck basses that weigh that ALONE, so I would think this is about average for a doubleneck. Ialso know Mike Fath from way back...great guy and talented player but just a bit taller than BCR Greg...so I can see how this doubleneck could be a bit oversized for him.5) I believe this one is different from Tommy Shaw's in that the 6-string neck on the Fath is scalloped and it also has two humbuckers, not single coiils like Shaw's 6. I like the toggle layout on the Fath better too and the lipstick single-coil on the 12 neck. It may bot be everybody's cup of tea but it certainly stands out in a room full of other Hamers, has endorser pedegree and is recognized from all the print ads it was in !! Plus it's got more boomers on it that an Australian Aboriginie !!
MCChris Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Thanks for the real world account, mc2. We'll make that the last word on the subject.
