It's tubed with 2 massive new KT88 JJ's (and 6 new JJ ECC83's). I had it recovered by Kress Amps in emerald green tolex and a wheat grille to give it the Bogner look. It can be open or closed back too. It has the BEST clean channel of any amp EVER! The dirty channel is killer old-school rock/blues and the high gain (very Marshally) channel can be tweaked for just about any flavor from plexi to raging. The built-in attenuater is OK, but I don't use it much. You can adjust the bias on the back panel by reading the LED lights (bias for dummies!). It will run on EL34's or 6550's. The KT88's work great on the 6550 setting.A tech recently went through it and fixed any potential cold solder joints.$575 plus exact UPS shipping. (It is VERY heavy, so shipping might be pricey.) Or an interesting trade?? I do PayPal.Here are the pictures:http://myweb.core.com/photos/skuder@execpc.com/AmpegVL503/-Donskuder@execpc.com
kurtsstuff Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 So.....your keeping the JSX eh?? lol!!...ok...I'm gonna order one up....dammit....
MCChris Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 An aside ... how do you like those JJ preamp tubes? I just got some for my Valvetech to hopefully tame some of the top end and have yet to install them.
Scooter Posted April 20, 2005 Author Posted April 20, 2005 I've NEVER had a problem with JJ tubes. Bob at Eurotubes is so helpful and knowledgeable, that he always sets me up with the right tubes!

Scooter Posted April 20, 2005 Author Posted April 20, 2005 Which tube? ECC83S = well rounded - not dark IMOECC803 = big mids, lots of highsECC832 = darker, smoother, less gainECC81 = ?? never used oneECC82 = ?? never used one
MCChris Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Which tube? ECC83S = well rounded - not dark IMO These are the ones. Thanks.
ZR Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I have a variety of tubes and I think the JJ's are darker than most 12ax7's, but in a good way.
MCChris Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I have a variety of tubes and I think the JJ's are darker than most 12ax7's, but in a good way. Cool. Looking forward to hearing 'em.
black magic Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I also love the JJ`s, I have 3 JJ high gain and 1 balanced in the phase invertor and 2 JJ 6L6`s. Great tubes. Jack.
woodpile Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I just retubed my T50C with JJ power's and pre's and it has made a huge difference by getting rid of the brittle high end.The Ampeg is an awesome looking amp, btw.
Guest cruster Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 That Ampeg is a beaut! Good luck with the sale! As far as the JJ 12a*7s...I have an ECC83S as the preamp in my scratch-built (http://www.shermonster.org/blog/ entries are under 'amplifiers') p1x and it sounds great. I have to keep the treble turned about 3/4 down, though, as it tends to be a bit trebly (is that a word?). With just the bridge single-coil in my strat-o-copy, it makes my ears bleed (not really, but..). I have the ECC82 to swap in, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Everything I've read, though, says the 82 is really a 12au7, so less gain. I wonder what the difference is between the ECC82 and the ECC832. EDIT: The ECC82 is virtually impossible to overdrive in this amp. A bit warmer than the ECC83S. Probably better for clean rhythm (country, jazz, etc.) than much of anything else. I like it, for what it is...but the 83S is going back in.
kurtsstuff Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I just put 4 Groovetube 12AX7M's in my Rivera but...gonna switch back to the JJ ECC83's....a touch more gain and easier to get the false harmonics and feedback and such..
Armitage Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I can't stand the tone of JJ preamp tubes. Dull and lifeless. I had two sets thinking it was just a bad run, nope.
Guest cruster Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 What's the alternative (or alternatives?), Armitage? Not that I really need to buy more tubes, but...well, it's kind of like a crack addiction. Oh, and bump on the sale listing!
Brewmaster Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 The amp you put it in will really determine how much you like a given preamp tube in the V1 spot. I have found that JJ ECC83s from one of the reputable tube dealers, ( Euro tubes, Dougs tubes, KCA, Lord Valve, et al) will work well 90% of the time. Yes, the JJ's ECC83S in general is a beefier tube. Dark? Not really IMHO. Other good current production preamp (12ax7) tubes are the EH and the 9th generation Chinese. The one preamp tube that took the brittle highs out of my Soldano Reverb-o-sonic is the NOS Jan Philips. The JJ' didn't cut it in this amp, the first time I pulled a JJ preamp because it did nothing. I tried every preamp in my drawer, you name it I tried it, only the Jan Philips helped this amp. I said it before, there are courses for horses.
