Computer Speakers

The sub in my computer speaker surround system crapped out. It sounded ok, but nothing great. I think I picked it up off a Staples clearance table a few years ago.

Any suggestions for something that sounds pretty good, isn't crazy expensive, surround sound is cool but not necessary. Subwoofer a must.

Thanks!

Dave, I've never heard of most of those, but the Logitechs are a good buy and decent sounding. That particular configuration, over the pregression of several model names/numbers has come in a pretty consistent second to a much more expensive Klipsh system in a batch of reviews I've seen on computer hardware boards.

I use these and think they sound uncommonly good. You could get a couple of pair for surround. Plenty of honest power too.

After I posted and started looking into this, I'm thinking about heading out to a store and just listening. I wouldn't mind a nice sounding Klipsch or something if they're not crazy expensive. I'd like to keep it to $200 and under, but I want to hear the $50 systems and $100 systems too just to compare. I don't use sound a whole lot but my son listens to a lot of Jazz on his iTunes and plays along to the recordings using his real books.

I bought a pair of Bose series II for 68 bucks at Sams Club that have a great sound. They have another version that has a subwoofer that I imagine sound good too.

Just get the Klipsch ProMedia. I've had my 2.1's for 4 or 5 years and they're still selling the same model for the same price as 4-5 years ago.

+1 Jason01 has these and they sound great. I also have Klipsch 3 way desktops and they are great. Not as much base as the 2.1's obviously, but good and they were 100 bucks. Best buy has the 2.1 for 158 bucks.

I bought some Altec lansings a few years back ... $100 incl nice sub, sound fantastic!

I'm sure they don't make the same model today ... but I would check out Altec Lansing

Good stuff!

once again ... dont listen to me! <_< checked out the circuit city website and the Altec Lansings got a horrible rating

Logitechs seem to be at the top of the heap

I've had these for a while now, 6 months or so. They are so good I ended up buying a whole new home system with Klipsch speakers as well. Best buy has these for like $129 I think?? I paid $150 at the time for mine <_< Anyway they are incredible. They do not sound like good PC speakers, they sound like good speakers period. The difference seems to be that the satelite speakers can produce some decent mid bass so, you don't end up with the huge frequency gap that is typical between the sats and sub. I will also say that when I checked them out at Best Buy, they didn't sound near as good as they did at home.

I've got the sub/satellites from Acoustic Authority per JohnnyB's recommendation from a while ago. The one with the 'mouse' that controls the volume/sub/on-off has the 50w per side amp built into the sub (I think they're about $100 or less). Also per Johnnys suggestion I replaced the stock Satellites with a spare pair of Klipsh KG-1 bookshelfs, which improved them further. I listen to radio and CDs a lot in my office, so I got a used Adcom 450 preamp tuner, I run the computer into the Adcom, then to the Acoustic Authority. It sounds better than most of my friends home stereos.

Have you got access to an old stereo receiver and a couple of speakers. Go line out from your sound card into the receiver. Then you can find just a sub at a decent price. I will never go back. I am using an Onkyo 100W with Polk monitors and sub. It rocks man.

I didn't get out to hear anything today, but I want to listen to the Klipsch and Bose.

I do have an old stereo receiver and a very old pair of Polk 5A's from 1981..... But they're too big for my desk. I'm looking for a compact system.

I run my computer into my home receiver and now thats the only way I listen to music. Everything I own is on my computer and its nice to be able to make playlists on the fly. Next step will be when I get a HDTV. I'll stick my computer behind the tv stand and get a wireless keyboard and mouse. Call of Duty on the bigscreen in dolby surround!

A pair of Marshall Stacks would give a nice full, live & tubey tone to your computers sound card.

Hehe just kidding.

It may not fit your requirements (inexpensive), but I want to mention it because they ABSOLUTELY KILL (sound amazing) and who knows, maybe you get a set cheap in an ebay auction.

Amazing sound. Yes there is a "cork sniffer" element to this, but the sound is truly amazing, and I have seen some go used on ebay for under $200.

I made the investment (not made lightly) and haven't regretted it for one second. I spend a lot of time on my computer working and these make that time oh so much more bearable.
