Hamer95USA Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Hey guys, I've been playing my '97 T-51 guitar for the past year. The sound of the guitar is very good. I'm not really liking the neck all that much. I find it quite chunky compared to my MIJ Strat, Diablo II or Chapparal Elite 90 guitars. What is the difference between the T-51 neck and a Fender American Standard Tele neck? Tele player's inputs & opinions are welcomed. Guitar George
mrhappy Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 I have 2 T-51s... One has a big fatty... the other is slimmer, probably closer to the Fender.
teleman Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 The T51's have a flatter radius than the Fender necks.
tomteriffic Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Flatter radius and bigger frets. Mine's pretty fat as well.
Hamer95USA Posted January 15, 2007 Author Posted January 15, 2007 Hey guys, I was playing the guitar again and I was thinking if there could be any way to shave the back of the neck to make it thinner. I like the fretboard radius, frets & width, but I'm not happy with the shape on the back of the neck. I find it big & chunky when I grab it. Would it ruin the resale value? Would it damage the neck? Has anyone done this before? Should I get another neck or a different guitar? Guitar George
Disturber Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Hey guys,1 I Would it ruin the resale value? 2 Would it damage the neck? 3 Has anyone done this before? 4 Should I get another neck or a different guitar? Guitar George 1 - Yes, most certainly.2 - Most likely, if you're not a pro.3 - I've seen examples where the trussrod has been exposed. (One sold here on the sales board recently).4 - I did bite the sour apple when I found the neck on my Artist Korina to be to big. After much agony I sold the guitar and got another one. Probably the best solution unless you really think the guitar has that special thing that no other guitar you've every played has.
Steve Haynie Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Should I get another neck or a different guitar? The cheapest route is to sell the guitar you have and find one that you like. If you want to experiment a little, you can buy a replacement neck. Keep the Hamer neck in case you ever need to sell the guitar, though.
Guest Meshuggah Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Don't shave it!Sell it!Buy another more to your liking.Please don't shave it?

atquinn Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 I'd recommend buying another T51 with a thinner neck and either swapping necks or keeping the thin-necked one (if you just like it more). Then sell the extra T51. Your current T51 is beautiful, so I don't imagine you'll have a hard time moving it if that's the decision you make.-Austin
holLoWskull Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 I would think that with all the folks on this board who always say they hate slender necks and want fuller ones, you should have very little problem finding someone here "stuck" with T-51 with a medium or slender neck profile who'd love to do an even trade with you. Although I'm a proponent of the camp that feels guitars are meant to be played first, admired second (so a well thought out and well done mod is good if it makes the guitar more enjoyable for you), my experience has been that no matter how cool or well done a modification is made to a guitar it almost always de-values that guitar with potential buyers unless you get EXTREMELY fortunate and find a buyer that is looking for that particular modification(s). Bottom line it's your guitar to do with as you like. If you're on the fence about keeping it or selling it though, I'd echo the advice already given here...sell or trade your current T-51 to someone who might find it a perfect fit, and find one that feels perfect to you.In answer to your original question, I have played a few Fender USA and Japanese Teles (mid 80's up to recent)and find the necks to be most similar to the "medium" carve (though a few had more of a 'V' profile than the Hamer necks). My 94' T-51 has a medium profile which I find just about perfect, so maybe the early ones tended to run thinner? Your's is a 96 or 97, correct? Maybe they got chunkier towards the end of the model run?
Hamer95USA Posted January 16, 2007 Author Posted January 16, 2007 Hey folks, Thanks for the input. So don't worry, I won't shave the neck of the guitar. I'm not bonding with the feel of the guitar neck. That's all. I would like to ask if someone in the HFC is interested in a trade of my '97 T-51 guitar for a T-51 with a thinner neck profile? If anyone here has a T-51 with a thinner neck profile, I would be interested in it. Either that or I may sell the guitar and get a Fender American Standard Tele or possibly trade my T-51 for an American Std. Tele. Guitar George
jgmoyers Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Let me know if you decide to sell it. I may be in the market for one fairly soon, and I like big necks!Jeremy
