Just want one for my basement....don't want to spend any money though... What's decent that can be had for cheap... The Peavy radials might fit the bill?

I picked up a used 5 Peice Tama Rockstar for around 300 bucks. My drummer uses it for every gig. Sounds great.

Check your local classifieds. There always seems to be a parent selling their kids kit because they lost interest. Can usually come across some nice stuff.

Electronic drums are the master volume amps of the drum world. They may not sound as good as the real thing (although they can sound really good and are easy to record), but if volume is a concern, you should definitely consider them.

+1

They're like exercise equipment in that regard.

Electronic kit on the cheap . . . Find a set of Remo practice pads, some cheap triggers, and an Alesis D4. You should be able to find all that for a couple hundred bucks.

We have the same five-piece Tama Rockstar kit at Polluted Womb Studios, and my 15-year-old son has one of them too. Incredible bang-for-the-buck kits - I think I got Joey's new and shipped to the door with hardware, Tama-branded cymbals, a throne, even gigbags for the shells and cymbals, in one big package deal for $450 shipped from MF a couple of Christmases ago.

The Pacific by DW kits are very nice, but maybe a little more than what you need. Point being, they fall into that "kid who lost interest" category, but are very nice quality drums. I took up the drums about 5 years ago myself.

Peavey Radials? The Peavey Radials are my personal favorite. I would have loved a set of the stained-wood Radials if I could have afforded them. The most ingenious design and the best sounding IMHO. If you can get some Radials for cheap, I'd say go for it. They have very thin shells, which contributes to their tone but might make them less rugged for travel, but it appears that travel isn't an issue here. Their thick maple shell snare drums really kill, too.

Tama Rockstars consistently win the price/performance reviews in the drum mags. Can't lose with 'em. Affordable and they sound good, and most Tama hardware is good as well.

I've got a sweet Gretsch Catalina Birch set. Great kit for the money, and I bought a set, so you know they're cheapskate friendly!

ddrum has some cool lower end acoustic kits out, complete with hardware, for less than $500. I'm seriously thinking about grabbing a set myself.

It's pretty easy to make a cheap kit sound nice with new heads and proper tuning. Cymbals are where the loot should go if you are on a budget.

Big +1. You can't tune cymbals.
