Craig S Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Brighter than a JB? My FM is some what flat sounding with the JB that's in it. I'm not a big pickup swapper but I am considering trying something differnet.
hardheartedbill Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I would say not as bright , or maybe more full is a better description. Lot's of fat low mid w/ about the same output in BBQ , I have one in the bridge of a Mirage II, it's just about the best bridge humbucker I've ever used, really good for aggressive rock
jerseydrew Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I'll let you know how they are by the end of the week. Greg just sent me one to put in my 81 Sunburst. I should be receiving it today or tomorrow.
sw686blue Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I have a Special FM that I bought from Greg and it is equipped with BBQ in the bridge and a Genuine Texas in the neck position. I can not compare it with a stock Special FM but the tone in this guitar is amazing. I find the pickups hot but not in a distorted kind of way. They are very articulate and chimey. YMMV. I haven't A/Bed them yet with my other guitars.I would definitely recommend them.Nick
ZR Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I have an Ash Daytona that I NEED to put a real humbucker into. The SD Hot Rails is actually quite surprising in that it can almost get that full humbucker sound but I need the real thing because I'm just too picky about it. My first thought was to put an SD Custom Custom. I have one in my Flame maple body Chap Custom and it's just great. To me, both the Ash and the maple have some similar sound characteristics in that they both have incredible sustain and do not lack in the highs department. The Custom Custom would seem to match the APS-1's well as they all would have Alnico 2 magnets and somewhat subdued in the teble department. How does the BBQ compare to the SD Custom Custom? Thanks as usual for the help!!

Then again, that might have been the Genuine Texas I have in the neck slot. And a lot of credit goes to the Fargen; damn that little bastard kicks out a lot of bass thru a 4x12!

Are you serious about the Hot Rails not being enough humbucker-like? That pickup kills in my daytona. I think it's one of my better sounding guitars.+1 for the Rio BBQ/Gen TX set, BTW. I don't agree with the statement that they are dark. The are voiced differntly than the JB, but again not dark. Amp settings make all the difference.
serial Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Hands down my favorite bridge pickup. I like the Gen Tx in the neck as well, MUCH better than the stock JBs that they used to stick in there.
ZR Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Well, like I said, I was surprised about how close it came but not close enough for this Humbucker fiend. EveryStrat type guitar I ever had was real-humucker equipped and just look how far that's got me in the music biz!!
straightblues Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 How are the BBQ and Texas for clean tones and on the verge of overdrive type tones. I play blues on the cleaner side (Muddy, Howlin Wolf, BB King, Albert King, type stuff.)
AdmiralB Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 How does the BBQ compare to the SD Custom Custom? I'd say the BBQ fits neatly between the Custom 5 and the Custom Custom. More defined and less muddy than the CC, not quite as articulate and a little warmer than the C5.
Travis Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 I've got a pair of Pearly Gates in my Special FM and I really like them. Can anyone compare the BBQ to those at all?
