Punkavenger Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I just had a CRAAZZZY idea. I'm willing to trade my 2003 vintage orange Special w/sustain block, one piece body and vintage carve neck, new bareknuckles mule paf's ($335) sounds and plays fantastic. For your '77 to '81 Special or Sunburst. In very good to excellent cond. some minor wear, chips or scratches ok. No skinny necks... med D shape would be perfect. No repairs, all original if possible. bursts, SFG, black or natural would be great. No klunkers ... I want this to be a keeper. Something along the lines of that Sunburst that Greg just had up for sale would be perfect. It could even be a little more beat that that.My Special just looks too new ... I like vintage stuff, I was thinking about having it aged but ... nawww, thats stupid! So anyway, a great opportunity for someone that wants a new Special.
BCR Greg Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 That guitar is the first publicly available Sustain Block guitar of the new era.
Stokesdead Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I was actually considering just such a deal the other way around. Send me an email at stokesdead AT yahoo DOT com
Punkavenger Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 That guitar is the first publicly available Sustain Block guitar of the new era. thanks Greg... the price just sky rocketed! I was actually considering just such a deal the other way around. Send me an email at stokesdead AT yahoo DOT com Thanks Chris ... I couldn't get your photobucket info to work ... could you post pics here, please also the pic in my signature of the Special is current ... mint! not a mark on it!
zorrow Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Kind of weird thread... Both look killer. This seems to me just like a compulsive case of "exchangism"... What's the point of the exchange, you swingers? Can you explain me, please?
Guest Meshuggah Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Different smells, different tastes, it's suburban thing really.
bruce919 Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Punk...You can't get rid of it until I save enough to buy it from you. I was thinking about that guitar the other day.
Stokesdead Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 well my thinking is I don't want to swap the pickups out or anything on the vintage one and would like something a bit more PAF sounding. I was kicking around the idea but didn't post anything. Then PunkA started this thread and it was like oh look a yin to my yang. LOL~CS
zorrow Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Well, it was an astral coincidence then, I guess. Punk should have his well-thought reasons too.
Guest pirateflynn Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 That natural one makes me feel like butter.
Punkavenger Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 Kind of weird thread... Both look killer. This seems to me just like a compulsive case of "exchangism"... What's the point of the exchange, you swingers? Can you explain me, please? Hey, weren't you the one that keeps changing his Vees around for no apparent reason? I'm on a mission for MOJO! (or was it buttah?) Basically my Special is perfect... I love it ... the one piece mahogany body just kills me. It's just too new! I just like old shit... thats all. There are two kinds of guys, one prefers new 501's w/new balance trainers, one prefers old 501's with motorcycle boots... I'm the later. I had my heart set on a 81 Special before I bought the 2003 and the deal didn't go through (the m/o got lost in the mail.) Then Greg (all things are Greg's fault, haven't you noticed?) posted that incredible Sunburst just recently and I'm like thats it! thats the one! So since work is slow and i have no "extra" cash I thought maybe I could trade for something similar Thats it ... end of story
Stokesdead Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 so punk avenger you interested or you gonna hold out for a sunburst?
zorrow Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Hey, weren't you the one that keeps changing his Vees around for no apparent reason? No, no... It wasn't me! I just keep buying Vees around because I love old Vectors -- love MILF's too! And the only Vee I've sold was that Vector KK -- it had a neck too thin to my tastes.
silentman Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I think finding a neck that fits your needs might be the hard part.
Punkavenger Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 so punk avenger you interested or you gonna hold out for a sunburst?Interested! love that top! lets just see where this thread takes us ...
kizanski Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I think finding a neck that fits your needs might be the hard part.Yep. There ARE no vintage Specials or Sunbursts with a neck like the one on that '03 Special.
Stokesdead Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 honestly my hands are huge (I'm 6'4") and the neck on my 80 special is very similar to the neck on my old '02 Studio. Granted it is a tad thinner up at the nut but the depth is very similar and especially in the mid to upper range of the neck practically the same. So I guess my 80 is just different from the rest.~Chris
zorrow Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I've stayed away from Specials because of their thin neck. That's great yours is chunkier!
Stokesdead Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I wouldn't call it chunky but I am a large man and it is doable. Maybe my '02 was on the thinner side and I was already used to that. I doubt it though I have played some pencil neck early hamers where you bend over to pick up a pick and you can hear the strings go out of tune from the weight of the headstock. LOL
kizanski Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 My point is the neck on the '03 is huge....and it plays like butter.
Punkavenger Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 yeah, the neck thing is a very personal issue. the baseball bat neck on my 68 SG was great... but the fretboard was so narrow I couldn't get all my fingers on there. Someone told me Gibson made different widths ... A, B and C. The fretboard on the 2003 Special is the perfect width... but the vintage carve neck could be slightly smaller to be perfect for me... just slightly. I do like having some girth/roundness on the back of the neck... Don't like the wide flat neck. My hands are large... but not HUGE. I like the neck on my 82 blitz the best of any guitar I've owned which is why I'm dumping all this money into it. Greg called it a medium D which is rounder and deeper than a C. so if the Special that Chris has is a medium D I'd be "stoked" har har I gave the information about the vintage Special to Serial so hopefully he can find out some info on it. Chris, I'd like to have pics of the headstock and back of the guitar, please, if that is possible. A little beat up is ok. Thanks! I've stayed away from Specials because of their thin neck. That's great yours is chunkier! Dude you should see the vintage carve neck on my 2003! caveman style... you could kill a mastodon with the thing!
Stokesdead Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 THe back side does have some imperfections that aren't showing up in the pictures. Kinda like the lacquer has sunk in to the pores of the mahagony in places.
