BruceM Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I've had my Taylor 610ce listed on my local craigslist for a few months now at what I think is a very reasonable price: $1600. I've had a few lookers, but no buyers. I'm not desperate to sell, I'm simply running out of guitar storage space and have been moving a few that I don't play very often. So, a few weeks ago I get an email from a very interested prospective buyer. After some back and forth, he finally tells me he lives in Arizona. I immediately reply, "No thanks, I don't want to ship." He suggests I contact a local dealer and ask if they'll ship for a fee. I've got a friendly neighborhood Taylor dealer, so I contact him. For $15 over shipping, he'll ship the guitar. I let the other guy know, and I get the following email: >>>>> That sounds reasonable. I'd like to go ahead and buy your guitar. Since we last corresponded, I have to take my dog in to the vet for an unexpected surgery to remove some sort of growth below his eye. Of course, the vet bill is $1,600... I don't know if this works for you, I can send $400 now (non-refundable) and the balance over 90 days (possibly sooner) in $400 monthly (non-refundable) payments. Once the balance is paid, you could take the guitar to your dealer. Let me know your thoughts, as I'd really like to buy your guitar. <<<<<< What would you do? PS: anyone want to buy a 1999 Taylor 610ce? Shipping is $15 over UPS Ground charges. Here it is:
hamerhead Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Ask for pictures of the dog.......BTW - NICE guitar.
Guest pirateflynn Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Well, if you're firm on the price of $1,600 and he's the only buyer after it had been advertiised for a few months ..... I say, go for it. Write out an invoice with those terms stated, email it to him and have him reply.Good luck, Bruce!
cmatthes Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Will you take $400 now and then the rest in $20 payments over 5 years? Oh - and the $15 over shipping should be spread out over the 60 payments too if that's not too much trouble. I think I'd try eBay at this point or if you need to make room, just send that silver Duotone to my address. Anything I can do to help, my good friend!
BruceM Posted November 5, 2007 Author Posted November 5, 2007 Ask for pictures of the dog....... BWAHAHAHA - great idea! I think I'd try eBay at this point or if you need to make room, just send that silver Duotone to my address. Anything I can do to help, my good friend! The silver duotone has left the building. Robb's got it now. You'll have to get on his list if you want that one. Your name will be right under mine.
MCChris Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I'd say get his address and phone number and actually speak with him on the phone before you do anything.
Guest pirateflynn Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I'd say get his address and phone number and actually speak with him on the phone before you do anything.Wait, He's sending you the money right? Don't give him your phone #! lol
Taylor Player Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Post it on the Acoustic Guitar Forum (formerly the Taylor Guitar Forum)--there are plenty of people over there with the interest and the means to buy it---especially in the natural finish and bonus points if its got the coveted "pink poodle" OHSC.http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/...isplay.php?f=17
Bloozguy Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 You could charge everyone $100 at the door on Friday night and then raffle it off!
BruceM Posted November 6, 2007 Author Posted November 6, 2007 Thanks for the advice, guys! I told him that our relationship hadn't progressed far enough yet for me to be his personal financier. I've still got the guitar, and even though it's on the block, I REALLY like this one. I'll be sad to see it go.
DavidE Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Man that's nice. I've been Jonesin' for a 614CE for years. Too many dreads in the stable to add this one though.
Teh Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Good call, Bruce. that's one of the oldest scams out there - Pay $400 for a $1600 guitar, then disappear. I would've told him to take a hike too...

However, 3 months is WAY to long to deal with someone I don't know. He'll either come up with the cash, or not.

The con artist sends the $400, then convinces you that he's good for the money but needs the guitar for a very important gig. The gig means the difference between slumming in the bar circuit or getting a record deal. Blah blah blah... You ship, he gets the guitar, then disappears... That's how it works...

BruceM Posted November 6, 2007 Author Posted November 6, 2007 Only an idiot would fall for that and BruceM is clearly not an idiot.Speak for yourself, Buster! No, wait...The guy emailed back offering half now, half in 30 days. Sounds too good to be true, but I'm waiting for the entire cash prize. It does look like our relationship is progressing nicely, though! I'll have him trained soon enough.
DavidE Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 As long as he paid by US Postal Money Order, I'd probably do that.
silentman Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Tell him to save the $$$ and contact you when he has the total amount. If you still have guitar, then sell it to him.
BruceM Posted November 6, 2007 Author Posted November 6, 2007 Tell him to save the $$$ and contact you when he has the total amount. If you still have guitar, then sell it to him.Bingo! Here's the text of my reply:I’m not willing to hold the guitar and ship under those circumstances.I’m not in a great hurry to sell this guitar, so I’ll just hold onto it for now.If you come up with cash, let me know, and if I still have the guitar, I’ll consider sending it.That's when he replied and offered 2 installment payments instead of 4. I'm not even going to respond....
BruceM Posted November 7, 2007 Author Posted November 7, 2007 All's well that ends well. A happy buyer just walked off with this guitar. He's buying it for his 14 year old daughter.I haven't heard back from my old boyfriend yet. He was kind of a mess anyway...dog hair everywhere.
belgian Posted November 7, 2007 Posted November 7, 2007 He's buying it for his 14 year old daughter. Sanne wanted it too, you missed a chance of an almost paid flight.

Hmmm, perhaps I could find another guitar that Sanne might be interested in! Hi Sanne! You're getting clever, Conrad. Buying guitars "for your daughter." Careful, she might catch on!
