Jimbilly Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I'm told my JCM800 that is out on loan needs new power tubes, it's the 50watter. What do y'all like and why? -I've got 2 good pairs of real Mullards, but I'm not loaning those out! I'm going to have my tech take a look, I don't want anything important to fry. this one, 2204?:

Will be trying the GT Mullard-type copies soon, but only from a dealer that burns them in for 24 hours first.
JohnnyThunders Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Winged C are good in everything I've tried them in but my Matamps sound best with JJ EL34's but not the l's for soome reason.
Jimbilly Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 Well, my local source happened to find a NOS pair of Sylvanias for $80 (for the pair), I'm going to pass it along to my buddy, although I should really keep them for myself, I think I'll probably be able to. I'll pick them up in the morning, I'll share pics.

kurtsstuff Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Is that too much?, -I'll try to beat him up a bit on price then.... Damn!! Great tubes...last forever and sound (insert expletive here) Bout $300.00 for set....if there the fatboys..
Disturber Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I have never tried the "Winged C's" - some swear by them, others say they are very bright. So I guess it's a matter of what kind of tone you like. I'm sure they are great tubes. I run JJ tubes in two of my Marshalls. EL34's in the 2104 and KT77's in the 4140. Both great tubes. The JJ34L is supposed to have more headroom than the JJ EL34. As I don't want much headroom in a Marshall I tried the EL34's this time and I like them. But I had E34L's in another amp and they sounded great too. A matter of preference I guess.I have old RFT EL34 in my oldest marshall and they are very very good tubes as well. These can still be found at reasonable prices for NOS tubes. Perhaps about 80 bucks a pair, that is what I paid a year ago I think. Marshall used to deliver many of their amps with these tubes in the 70's, (they where branded under many names).
murkat Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Svet "C's" or GT mullards. best ones out there, I have plenty of both, I'm hoarding just in case.... JJ's lasted about 2 minutes in my old Komet head...... wasn't good.
Jimbilly Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 These any good? My source and I were chatting, he's 76 and was in the first group of Marines to go into Korea, at age 17. Very humbling to hear him tell that. I didn't beat him up on price.

harryjmic Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I have tried the following in my Matchless Clubman; SED, KT77, and GT EL34M tubes. So far I probably like the GT's the best although the SED's are nice. The first set of KT77's were good but only lasted 2 months, this is not a good thing. I tried another set and for some reason they just didn't sound as good. I asked Bob at Eurotubes to get me some cool running tubes, perhaps these are too cool. Anyway, I really like the GT - EL34M, hopefully they'll hold up.
