velorush Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 I have pledged not to purchase any more guitars from sleazeBay, but this one is killing me: eBay 1997 Hamer Modern Vintage P-90 Can any of you tell me about the neck carve on the Modern Vintage? I have a Gibby with a "'59 Neck" that I consider to be the perfect profile (for me). Anyone with experience with both that could provide a comparison? If the carves are close, do me a favor and don't chime in. I need to be getting RID of guitars! Thanks
tomteriffic Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 I don't know about "Modern Vintage". That was a tag-line at some point but there has never been a Hamer model or model line going by that handle that I know of.What you have there is a pretty much bog-standard P-90 Special at a fair price, considering the condition. They rock. The neck, based upon the way Hamer necks gradually fattened up during the '90's and on my 97 Standard, is probably a nice, fairly hefty medium. It's likely not a "58 baseball bat" or a 60's "Slim Profile" either. The pickups are Duncan P-90's which are pretty hot. Some folks change them out for more boutiquey pickups, typically lower output ones. I like these because they fit the guitar: Loud, snotty and rude, but with a sweet neck pickup tone when called for. Nice axes.

Now I'm sitting here I'm distracted from what I need to be doing and compiling a list of what I can quickly sell to get $700 plus shipping from Fredrick, Maryland.Seriously though, thanks. One of the great benefits of being on this board is how you guys know the specs and are able to cut through the hype. Being a relative Hamer noob, this is a huge help.As for this bout of GAS: think about baseball... think about baseball... think about baseball...
Pieman Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 "My" '92 Special with Fralins is on the way to the Dutchman. Sold for $650 including shipping. The MD axe looks nice. Price is okay if it is as nice as it looks. If I were looking for another, that one looks pretty good. The guy tookl some nice photos. Hamers in the $500 - $700 range seem to still be moving pretty fast. I'd jump and then look for the money.
MCChris Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Yep, Tom nailed it. His entire post is spot-on.

veatch Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 ... baseball... baseball... Bea Arthur in a thong... Bea Arthur in a thong... Bea Arthur in a thong... LOL Now *that's* funny... I agree with going to lower output P-90s, but opinions vary. Trust yer own ears.

Nice axes.Agreed. I have a '97 Special, and the mid '90's necks are my faves for Hamer USA models. I used to have several Specials, I remember noticing that the ones that had thinner necks (they changed them sometime in '93, as I once had two '93's that had different neck dimensions) had the mini Schaller tuners, and the headstock was thinner in depth--their string posts protuded higher than later ones with the full sized Schallers and slightly thicker headstocks.P.S. The 'modern vintage' tagline came from the mid '90's ad campaigns, I believe, maybe later; Hamer has several copies of their ads from then up on their website. But like tomteriffic already said, it was never a 'designation'. I think that this is a case where a little information can become MISinformation.
