specialk Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Here Looks like serial #0736. Very nice, but not that nice....
bizzwriter Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Wonder what he paid for it a year ago...can't imagine there's another one in better condition anywhere at any price.
Jorge Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 The seller apparently might have been leaving in the one country that is not facing the worst consumer recession in a century, and is just returning from his long journey. He chose a bad moment to get top dollars for that one.

Now tell me which country that one is that's not facing "the worst consumer recession in a century", and I will be moving there in a NY minute,

DaveL Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 if there is one great thing about ebay, it's the reality that sets inwhen you run a whacked out price up the flag pole...
mirrorimij Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Serial Steve to the white courtesy phone.....What is the last known 4 digit serial number on a Standard? Would this 84 be a John Montgomery?
bmenary Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 What does this mean?Would this 84 be a John Montgomery? What makes it a John Montgomery?
mirrorimij Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 What does this mean?Would this 84 be a John Montgomery? What makes it a John Montgomery?IIRC, John made the necks and bodies for the early 4 digit stuff and sent them to Hamer for completion. Hopefully, Serial will chime in here as he probably knows more about John. I was under the impression that anything stamped (4 digits) was made by John and ink serial numbers (Sunbursts) were made entirely at Hamer. I heard this story second hand (or third hand) so it is really nothing more than legend until someone in the know substantiates it. I don't know the years John worked with Hamer. This 4 digit appears to be late one so I would like to know if John had anything to do with it.Someone needs to write a book on the early history of Hamer (wink, wink, cough, cough).
veatch Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Welp, i've always said, it's worth whatever someone else is willing to pay for it. I have to agree, the timing is pretty bad. The "Free Shipping" is a nice touch, though... Edit to add: He also has a Dean Soltero for $9k... Soltero 1/100
GusS Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 i dont think ive ever seen/heard of a "run of the mill" 4-digit fetching more than 6 grand

Bob's info is pretty much correct as I've been told firsthand from people who were there at the time. Montgomery passed away, but it was my understanding that the four digit stuff was all built in his basement in Winnetka. I think that that stuff came into the shop for finishing, assembly, etc. John was one of the original partners in Hamer, but was "bought out" early on by Paul and Jol and stayed on building. I think that the highest number that I'm aware of is #0748 or so and that's from 1985.As for the book-the early part of the history is written.I'd like to flesh out the 80s a little more though.
intelligentpony Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 How is it that no one seems to notice when an eBay ad has a best offer option? Yeah he's has the crack pipe BIN price but make an offer, you never know.

Yeah he's has the crack pipe BIN price but make an offer, you never know.Personally, when I see a ridiculous BIN price, I just don't bother contacting the guy. I just assume he is not a valid counterparty to do business with. I'd rather deal with someone who is willing, upfront, to do a deal at market price, and is not looking to have someone guess wrong and pay too much by mistake. But that's just me.
