Building my Perfect Beast: Flying V Plans

Recommended Posts

I'm now the proud owner of a "v" shaped piece of mahogany. Does anyone have plans on how to build a Flying V?

Should prove to be an interesting project. :)

The "58" style or the modern, 60s-80s style?

Nothing too pointy - skewers are best for the barbque. Really, I'm not picky at all. This is a first attempt, so I'm just trying to see if I can even cobble together something that works. And it doesn't bother me at all if it looks like it. : )

I have an autocad file of a flying "V".

Let me know.

What is an autocad file? Is it one of those things that if you have to ask, you shouldn't bother? :)

Autocad is a CAD (Computer aided design/drafting) software. I can turn the file into a dxf format. You sould be able to down load some type of free CAD software off the net that can open a DWG or dxf file.

Couple of issues I've been thinking about and hope to get your thoughts:

Pots

In order to cut less holes into the body, does anyone know of potentiometers that are double stacked with the top one having a audio taper and the bottom one with a linear taper? CTS seems to be a pretty reputable brand - anyone have any objections? : ) Have any of you used audio taper pots for the tone? Any issues?

Caps

I've read that Hamer caps measure out to .01 microFarads. Has anyone evermade put a number of capacitors on a rotary switch so you could pick different capacitors - going from .04 uF, .01. uF, 3300pF? Seems like you could have a tonal array right at your fingertips without having to horse around with pickups. Does the brand of the tone capacitor matter?

By the way, why can't you put RCA jacks on the wires of pickups and pots to make the process of swapping out pups easier? You'd still have to solder them on the wires, but that's once. Then you should be good to go, right?

Scale

Do I dare suggest a 25" scale? I've read that there are dead spots along the neck that can compromise the harmonics. Is that just bunk or is there something to that? If its true, what's the appropriate distance is between the nut and the leading edge of neck pickup hole to avoid hitting a dead spot?

Thanks for the help. : )
