BCR Greg Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 When's the last time you saw one of these? DAMN cool, this one. One old DiMarzio Dual Sound and two newer Virtual Vintage PAFs. $1199 with original case.
veatch Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I've always loved the look of those and the V2. I've *never* seen a three pup model before. Is that factory? I think the last time i saw one was at Moolenaar Music around '80 or '81... I seem to see the V2's from time to time - displayed but never played. You always come up with the cool shtuff, Mr. Greg.
Scottcrud Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Well, the last time I saw a 79 E2 2 hum model was a month ago, a buddy of mine owns it. Never seen a 3 hum model.
Scooter Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Hey! I had that same guitar (in 2 hum). The walnut pancake body was super dark sounding to my ears. Great 70's album-rock guitar!
Jim Browne Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 On the cover of the August 2009 Guitar Player.Well, actually, that one's a Flame Maple-topped version.Doesn't have the era-appropriate sandwichy-look like yours.Love the triple hums!
serial Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 it was not factory with 3 pickups, but it looks cool I think! The flametop is a totally different guitar in just about every way and was later-these were 79-81 IIRC, the flametopped one was after. This one and the V2 wereavailable in either maple with walnut laminates or walnut with malple laminates like this one. Cool guitars-I really liked them when they came out-not so much the Vs with the boomerang pickups though.
BCR Greg Posted July 4, 2009 Author Posted July 4, 2009 The third pickup was added. It had the Dual sound in the bridge and some crap pickups in it when it came in on trade, so I put in the Virtual Vintage PAFs to keep the 70's hot rod look.Killer guitar, light and resonant with a wide/shallow neck.

According to the article, the guy from Mastodon has an '82 E2, which seems to be more like a poor man's Standard, with none of the walnut/maple's groovy bevels, and more traditional Gibsonesque woods (although some of Orville's early, hand-carved acoustics were walnut, so maybe that is the most traditional!).
simon074 Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I had one just like that, except with only two pickups. It originaly came with Dirty Fingers pickups and a Gibson fine tuning bridge. I loved the hell out of that guitar. Then I was stupid enough to trade it for a first generation Zoom.
e/2 Explorer Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 it was not factory with 3 pickups, but it looks cool I think! Cool guitars-I really liked them when they came out-not so much the Vs with the boomerang pickups though. The e/2 Explorer (all versions) was produced between 1979-83 and is my guitar of choice The beveled pancake versions came in many versions including solid paint like the bahama blue and black versions This includes the CMT e/2 which came in three version; darksunburst, lightsunburst and clear (natural) The CMT e/2's were actually leftover guitars from the original CMT line and Gibson just changed the TRC's Below is a image of my 1980 maple/walnut version and a '81 CMT that went to my buddy Brandon Thanks for the heads up about this Jim and Gene, I am trying to contact Greg now I am new here but I am a longtime member of the Dean Forum (Northwinds), Seymour Duncan Forum (Northwinds), JCF (Joe Stump) and the unmentionable Forum Ron Another beauty, highly figured top
specialk Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Welcome, Ron. And great pics in your first post. Bonus Points!
zorrow Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Frankly, never. I'm still looking forward to seeing one "in person".
landon w Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 hey have you still got that scarab, and could you send me some picspm me for my email, or i think it may be on my profile

I know that the V2s and E2s with the beveled bodies came in different opaque finishes at the end of their runs (81 or 82?), but was not aware that they were available in any color other than the natural maple or mahogany when they first came out-at least that's all any of the dealers had or the lit stated. I've seen many V2s in different colors-blue, candy red, black and white among others (silverburst maybe IIRC?). I like the Explorers!
