Bennyboy-UK Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 Hi all,I think with my last couple of posts, I have the early stages of obsession with these!Spotted this - no affiliation or anything...Heres a Cali Std, in quite funky green metalic sparkle.92 Cali Standard - GermanyIt looks clean and un-buggered, but perhaps its a little on the pricey side - what do you all think?Cheers chaps,Ben.
JustKid Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I'd have to say it's very much on a pricey side. But then again, if some one is willing to pay....

Feynman Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I *still* want to try a Cali very badly, but they went from a little expensive to pulling in some crazy money since I've been here, and that's only been a couple of years.
veatch Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I'm usually the "seller's advocate" and say that any guitar is worth what someone will pay for it.Even i have to say that is high... Ebony board and Boomers at a minimum for that price. I like the finish, it's an earlier model ('90) which is cool (i like the strap lock where they were on the older ones...) and the stadium logo is trick, but it ain't a $2100 (US) guitar.Just sayin'...
Bennyboy-UK Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 I *still* want to try a Cali very badly, but they went from a little expensive to pulling in some crazy money since I've been here, and that's only been a couple of years. Yep, I got my Elite as a semi complete guitar back in 2004 or something - it was still 300 odd quid without a case or bridge pickup, extra hole in the top for a tone control that someone added years ago, and since went adrift. It was someones sweaty shredder once upon a time - but well played for a good reason. It got nurtured back to health with some fresh pickups - imported a couple of SD Parallel Axis units for the states - PA Stack for the neck and PA Dist for the bridge - and hey presto - ridiculously great sounding instrument. Playability is great - and the neck (to me) was a great profile - a fair bit thicker than a "Bend in a stiff breeze" wizard type, very comfortable. I was expecting max max +++++++treble due to the maple body/neck construction +Ebony board, but somehow, probably due to mystic voodoo, - not so, and it absolutely killed the '93 LP Standard I had at the time in an AB test with my gear. Plus it looks comedy to turn up with it to a blues bash - but holds its own at lower and mid gain nicely. The 'Get Serious' ad from an issue of Guitar Player in the 80's - I had to have one - took 15 years to grow up earn some cash and look properly - but worth it! Here it is... And...... its in store for a special treat - it'll take a couple of months - but i'm REALLY REALLY Excited about it...... Have a bash with one - I reckon there would be some variation between individual examples as with everything - but I love it - fair to say - hoope you aren't disappointed when you can get hold of one. Rambling post over.....! Cheers, Ben I'm usually the "seller's advocate" and say that any guitar is worth what someone will pay for it. Even i have to say that is high... Doink Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I think EVERYONE has an obsession with Cali's! Thus, the high prices. But the high priced ones almost always sell for what the seller wants, it just takes a while to find someone to bite on it.I'm surprised the big F machine hasn't forced Hamer to reissue the Californian. I know Paul is against it, but the suits only see in dollar signs. Surely they know it would be a huge money maker, as tons will fly off the shelves at whatever price they ask.
Feynman Posted July 16, 2009 Posted July 16, 2009 I just want Austin's old setneck Cali. I thought the prices were high then, but I think it would sell for a silly amount now...I still am surprised I get beat out on Veatch's black Cali. I thought I bid high enough to have it covered and then some. There's always my other true love, the Jackson Soloist. Too bad they don't have boomers (though Sharkfins rule too).I *need* me some SuperStrat love sooner or later.

Actually I think it's Jol who is the 'road block' to any future Hamer USA Californian reissues...if the Paul you're referring to is Paul (Hamer) I don't think he's been involved with the company in over 20 years (and could probably give two sh!ts what Hamer does these days) I *still* want to try a Cali very badly, but they went from a little expensive to pulling in some crazy money since I've been here, and that's only been a couple of years. - Feynman Mitch, if you are patient enough to keep doing daily searches on Craigslist, here on the HFC, music stores, and even maybe ebay you probably will find a Californian Elite for under $1,000 US dollars eventually. You just have to be the one to spot it first and have credit card/cash in hand. Even 1-2 years ago when Cali's were going for outrageously high prices, I saw 2 Elites that were less than $500 (Craigslist...alas I was too slow), missed out on a rosewood/dot inlay Cali at a local music store for $150 IIRC (Chris at Chrisguitars beat me to the axe, but I did see the SOLD tag and price), and was fortunate enough to negotiate for one here on the board from Rocktuna for a good amount under $1K. Not saying it's going to be easy as you may need some luck on your side, but it can be done if you don't need a collector's condition show piece.

JustKid Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Looking at your signature - looks like you have a similar problem to me!Ben I didn't quite understand what kind of problem you are talking about? does it say how much I spent on it? And I think everybody agreed that every little piece of cpar costs as much as one is willing to pay for it. To me - that price is ridiculously high. But if you want to go for it - it's all yours. Hell, for that money, I'd probably sell you one of mine's, even cheaper.
Feynman Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Well, it's safe to say this thread and Roli's post have fully flared my Cali GAS again.I better go logout.
