mattb Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Find a Crate Stealth 100. Designed by Lee Jackson. Nails that 80s tone.Seriously.-MattB
Jeff R Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I know they're not Hamers, but for real 80s metal tone, consider adding one or more of something like these to your arsenal... Like a San Dimas-era Charvel... Or one of the mad graphic creations of GMW Guitarworks... Or something from Wayne Charvel's new company, Wayne Guitars... Here's my personal 80s metal nightmare...an '88 Jackson Dinky strat. * images courtesy of the forum participants at www.usacharvels.com *
holLoWskull Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 High gain amp (such as previously mentioned Peavey 5150 or a Soldano) and/or ADA MP-1 preamp and rack mount amp + rack mount stereo effects processor + EMG pickups (yes, the very same ones that some folks here say "suck" and sound "sterile") should get you well on your way to nailing the "80's sound". I don't think it's been mentioned yet but all that won't get the complete sound unless you develop the "80's technique" (I've been fortunate to have jammed with and picked up some licks from decent slide-blues, jazz and country players who totally smoke my ass at those respective styles, but try getting 'em to do a 32nd note flurry of two handed tapping or arpeggiated notes and they look dumbfounded...it's all what you grew up with I guess)
Hamer95USA Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 You guys with your little girlie man foot pedals and combo amps can eat my shorts!! yeah, guys like eric johnson, jeff beck, and SRV were trying to get that elusive ratt/crue "tone" all the wrong way; they needed a bunch of rack gear and floyded guitars, not stompboxes/tube amps/vintage guitars. what a bunch of idiots! ha. Hey Brooks, I saw your posting. I was making a joke about the gear that I use in the pictures by impersonating Arnold Schwarzenegger's dialog. I wasn't slagging the specific players or their playing styles that you mentioned, hence the emoticon with the one eye winking as a sort of joke. If you took offense to my pun, I apologize, dude. I guess since I use guitars with Floyd Rose bridges and rack gear, that must make me an idiot too. Guitar George
Disturber Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Foggedabout what the previous posts say. This is all you need Saw the light of day in 1983 as a reply to the cry of help that came from the masses of young struggling guitarists in the 80's. Text from BossUS.com, Boss Classics: "This pedal sounded as if it was spawned from the devil himself. Well, not exactly, but it did offer legions of young metal-heads the thickest, most obscene distortion tones around - perfect for that '80s metal sound -all in a convenient little stomp box that looked pretty evil. Grrrrr. " Many fell for the hype, me included, what a piece of crap this pedal was.
Guest JackButler Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Those HM2's were the stuff!!!!!!!!!! I had one of those and an original RAT..both of them were phenomenal. I've tried others and never found anything that sounded anywhere close.

Had it in a drawer for the past18 years or so, (for nostalgic reasonsas it was the first pedal I bought. Savedhard to afford it). Been trying it everynow and then and I always thoughtit sounded like a bunch of beez . It just ruined the soundof a tube amp and made it sound like a bad valvestate.Anyway, I recently traded it for an originalbig black box Marshall Guv'nor. Now thisis a sweet pedal. Love it!disturber
