Amp simulators???

Question

I am looking for a way to add my electric guitar to my acoustic shows. I don't like the sound of running my hollow body throught an acoustic amp or the PA. I was reading up on the Boss FDR-1 that is supposed to get the "blackface" fender sound. I can't tell if you can use it as a preamp for a PA of if you have to use it with a guitar amp. I use a FDR RI most of the time for electric shows, and would love to incorporate this into my acoustic shows without having to add another amp(trip to the car). So has anyone used these COSM simulators direct to PA or with an acoustic amp? OR Is there something else I should be pointed towards?

The Fender DR pedal is designed to be used in front of a combo amp, NOT as a Direct device.

I would recommend a pocket POD ($110 new, ~$80 used) set to a clean Deluxe setting. For acoustic gigs I'll use the acoustic side of a Duotone into a DI, and then the electric side (through my usual pedals) into the Pocket POD into the PA and it kills. The pocket pod can also be run on regular pedal (BOSS, OneSpot, etc) power.

So (if you're not humping the PA) you can walk in with a guitar and a pedal bag and be set up inside of 5 mins and sound awesome!

I have a Pocket Pod I never use if you decide to go that way. Let me know and I'll let it go below $80.

If anotherfreak passes on it, let me know. I'd like to take it off of your hands since you're not using it.

I tried to gig with my POD 2.0 direct to PA once when my tube amp blew up and it was one of the most depressing experiences of my gigging life. Definitely don't try it unless you are intimately familiar with the monitor situation in the room you'll be playing. Otherwise, bring your own monitor, like a Tech21 Power Engine.

Also, back on topic, the Tech21 Blonde gets a lot of good reviews as a DI unit on TGP.

Line 6 sounds amazing live.

Omar Rodriguez, Jerry Cantrel and The Edge have fantastic live sounds and use the hell out of some Line 6 gear.

The amp models are pretty fuckin' accurate. If a member here is gonna let theirs go for $80, then that deal should be jumped upon.

The Tech 21 stuff sounds REAL good, but doesn't have the modeling accuracy of the Line 6 gear.

Line 6 provides the biggest bang for your buck. Professional results with a VERY low cost.

The trick running ANY sim direct to PA is dialing in a tone ahead of time. You cannot expect it to sound good turning on the cab sims without a bit of work. It will sound completely different thru the PA vs. your guitar cab.

My goal with this is to run it direct with a DI, or to an acoustic amp, and not have to bring an two amplifiers. I have to have something for the acoustic side and vocals, and I'm just trying to give the electric side a whirl without having to bring more stuff (I'll be 34 this year gotta start takin' it easy).

The Boss/Fender just peaked my interest 'cause that's the amp I use, and it has reverb and vibe. I'm all over checking out the Pocketpod, it's probably overkill, but I bet I can have some fun with it :D

I've run an old original Sans Amp Classic direct to board for recording in the past. Worked fine over studio monitors, which are kinda like PA speakers. Might give it a try, or the GT2.

Any Line6 POD product should work as well. As long as you take the time to set it up with the amp you're using.

If you want to go the expensive route, the Rivera Sedona amp works for both Electric and Acoustic. It has a tweeter that switches in for full range acoustic or out for electric through just the standard speaker.

The pocket pod definitely has the potential for overkill (and UNDERwhelming response :P, but if you just set up a quick program with their Fender Deluxe model and turn off any effects (turn two knobs down) it's VERY reliable and sounds great.

If you go direct, make sure you have a good level in your monitor, just like your vocals.

Ive been doing a duo gig with a mate for a year or so, mostly using amps, heavily attenuated.

We start with an acoustic set, then progress to tracks and electrics. And ALWAYS have trouble getting the amps to sit in the mix well.

Well this one gig a few months ago, my partner bought a vox amplug in and left the trainwreck home.

I thought he was having a laugh.. but was soon amazed.. the thing sounded great, and we never raised our volume. It sat in the mix real well, and we had the best gig we had had in ages.

Sure it didnt sound exactly like a tube amp, but as far as the punters cared, it could have been a 71' superlead!

That got me to searching out a realistic and easy to use quality piece of kit. Hello Tech 21 British.

The Sansamp is brilliant. Shamefully sounds very amplike, for 150 dollars you get a pretty convincing tube amp in a box, direct to desk. I LOVE tube amps, and build them and service them, but for shows, these are one less trip to the car and back, very easy to dial in, and sound briliiant. AND analogue, lets not forget that.

Ive owned pods in the past, and lack the patience to go thru 97 combinations of crap tofind the one usable tone i like, thats barely acceptable. They have their place with some folk, and ive heard them used and sound great.

But if you want a no brainer easy to setup cheap piece of analogue goodness, try a Tech 21.

sorry about the introduction....but a great demo of this pedal.
