P90s for humbucker holes wanted. Part 2 of my Poverty Guitar

So in summary: the advertising business is still in the toilet and most of my past employers are bankrupt. So I took a government job at the same pay I was making when I was 26, but it's secure, a couple miles from home, and low-pressure.

However in order to keep the household slush fund -- car repairs and emergencies -- flush and not have to touch savings, I'm going to sart cashing in guitars and my sweet 2007 Vespa. I'll be down to only a pair of low-bucks guitars.

Number One will be -- hold your breath -- a First Act I bought on closeout from the factory for $79.99. I honestly love the body shape, the neck, and the bridge. I had to polish and level the frets myself, file the nut down, and fix an issue with how the strings run through the body, and now I'm going to refinish it in a monstrous metallic glitter finish and put in good tuners and want to stick a couple of single-coils in it.

I have the weird ambition of keeping the cost under $125 total. Scored tuners for free, bought the paint and clearcoat and now I just need a couple of (insert favorite hum-sized P90s here) to finish. Anyone clearing out a junk drawer? Found some in the street? Have some cheapos? let me know. I'm going to keep a record of this project and post pics. Thanks!

Ha! I'm with you man! I've been on a selling spree lately to make ends meet. The other benefit is simplifying my life. But, if I didn't need the money so bad then all of a sudden simplifying my life wouldn't matter and I'd keep all this stuff!

Anyway, I guess I basically just have a frugal nature, so I like the idea of an inexpensive guitar. I got a couple weird necks from a lovely HFCer and have a pile of other junk. I'd like to turn them into a Tele style, and a small bass someday. I don't have any PU's like you're looking for but I'll keep you in mind.

I'll tell you what I would do. Order a set of Dream 90s from Guitarfetish. The Dream 90's are his 'first" and best sounding pick-up. IMHO.

Though I like his Rails-Modern/Vintage voiced. I can't remeber the price but I doubt a set would cost you $75.00.

I know that the price of the guitar.

Yup, I'll probably end up going with the GFS Dream 90s. Still, I figured someone here might have an interestiung suggestion! As for the Hamer... I think you'll see it, the NAMM show Bluesbird, the Songbird, the '69 Teisco, the E-Series MIJ Strat all for sale soon... but not the Veillette-Citron!

the '69 Teisco,

My first guitar was a Strat copy Teisco Del Ray I got in 1968. It's long gone, but I still have the headstock badge for it! Wanna describe your P-90 Special real quick, even though I can't affoed it?

Ha! Sure. It's a pretty much pristine, super-clean one with ONE ding at the headstock. And it's kind of creamy-pale yellow-ivory, not TV yellow but not arctic white. Skinny neck, new case, sounds like God and plays smooth. Best Special I've owned and Ive had four of 'em. PM me if you are interested, really...

Thanks for the info, polara. Unfortunately I wasn't kidding when I said I can't afford it. As others here, I am trying to downsize/non-consume for this year. I hope I'm successful. That's why I want to watch the progress on your Poverty Guitar. It sounds like a timely project. Best of luck, bro!
