Don't you just love a fresh Hamer in the stable? Especially after identifying a model, then finding said model at a righteous price?

I found this at GC used, and had it shipped to my door after a call and in-hand description. I asked all the usual questions, and was satisfied by the response. It sounded like a great deal.

I figured I could remedy the EMG situation and be the first to try out the Bladerunner bridge to cure the Wilky infestation, and have me a maple-boarded Stratoid I could ride off into the sunset with.

Ahh, somebody changed out the strap buttons. Hmm, matching trem cavity cover, too. Hey, WAIT A SEC!!! :D

Someone has some splainin' to do I think? Oh, and what do you suppose originally came in this case? NOT a Daytona, of that I am reasonably certain. The bottom "horn" cutaway is way smaller, like a T-62 or Vintage S maybe? Phantom? I've never seen a case so fat (deep) before, either. Looks like you could keep the trem arm on with the case closed!

It's always interesting when dealing with the Evil Empire. The guy on the phone looked it over and basically pronounced it "mint and pristine". :D Too bad he missed the huge paint chip showing an inch of exposed wood along the bottom edge on the butt. I know, it is a huge guitar and such a minor detail is easily missed........... :D

I'm not complaining really, just sharing my slight frustration and amusement at another GC deal going less than smoothly. They usually make it right, though, or I can get all my $$$ back, so I'm not worried about that aspect. I'm mostly bummed though, because I REALLY wanted a sweet maple-boarded Daytona in my mitts, but only got halfway there this time? At least it plays and sounds pretty damn good. This should be interesting. :D

Maybe if I can get it for Tree-Fiddy...............

Gee... but I like it! Sorry for the discrepancies, but [big picture] this is an amazing looking piece of kit. The EMGs appear to be SA's (rather than the S's). I remember liking them when I had them - they sure are quiet! - and they have value if you were to eBay them. The [part of the] neck [we can see] looks pristine and unabused, even unused! Looks like a really nice score (to me, at least).

As a guitar on its own merit, I like it OK too. Being the way I am, however, It will take some "adjusting" to take the feeling of being kicked in the nuts away. Does it really matter that it isn't 100% Hamer? From a purely functional viewpoint, maybe not, but from an emotional standpoint I have to admit I'm a bit gutted. I lifted the 'guard and popped the neck off but found no markings other than "BLONDE" in magic marker with the serial # penciled in under it in the neck cavity. The body is 3 pieces routed S-S-S and has a nice thin finish on it that is sinking perfectly into the grain.

The neck is awesome. Nice and fat and in really great shape, save for some orange-peel finishing near the nut. !993 model it is.

EMG's are the Gilmour setup with the Presence and Expander modules.

This is reminding me a bit of the Ibanez Destroyer incident, in that the verbal description doesn't quite match the reality, but I guess I didn't ask if this Daytona had an aftermarket body now, did ? :D

SWEET score dude! Wow, they really laid on the trans white thick and rich on this one. It looked almost vintage white when I first saw it.

Don't sell this guitar short, it is waaay more than half way there. I'd say that it is 85% of what you were looking for. You can touch up the white spot with a ReRanch vintage cream pen.

Nice score, but I think you should return it because the neck plate has a scary looking face on it :D:D:D

I have a six-screw vintage Fender style bridge that you can have if you want to get the Wilky off of there. Let me know. :D

If you're going to EMG, that's a great way to EMG [Pulse, anyone?]!

I'm sorry, I missed the aftermarket body detail. I can see why you'd be upset. Aftermarket body or not, that's a fine looking guitar, but I have experienced that 'kicked' feeling.

BTW: my Phantom case was really thick like that, and I COULD close the case with the trem arm on (it was bolted on, so it wouldn't come off easily).

Looks remarkably similar to yours. Might there be some positive arbitrage to be had here? Surely an original Phantom case might be worth a good bit to the right person. Just a thought to help you 'cough this one out.'

That IS a Phantom case, fer sher.

Still a cool guitar, but I hear ya on the swapped out body. I take it the strap buttons aren't recessed like on a Daytona too?

It may have been that the actual Hamer body was too heavy and got swapped out. I snagged a Daytona body years ago for the same reason...it wasn't half bad, actually.

Phantom case it is then.

Now, the REALLY trippy part of this is that I passed on a 80's Phantom to pick up this Daytona. It was white, with a Sustainblock trem. No case.... :D

Yeah, this one.

Somehow the vibes are just a hair off it seems. :D

Did you pull the trem cover off to be sure someone didn't just cover the hamer route with an aftermarket cover? It looks bigger on one side than the other.

Yeah, it's routed like the standard Fender pieces. No shielding paint, Fender PG fits perfectly, etc....

Aftermarket.

Mine weighs a ton, too. Great guitar, but it's understandable why someone might swap out the body. That said, it sucks that you weren't made aware of it. It's one thing to swap out the body, but when the pickups, pickguard, case, etc. aren't original, well - you basically got a partsocaster with a Daytona neck. If it was cheeeeep and plays good, then maybe no big deal. But if you thought you were buying a Daytona with swapped pickups, you should be pissed.

In this type of situation will your local GC to make it right, or must you deal with the shipping GC?

No, I can walk in to my local GC and get a refund - in this case a full reimbursement because it was not at all as they described. They offered to knock $100 off, but it is still then a $450 partscaster with a case that doesn't fit well at all, and it still leaves a slightly bitter taste in the mouth somehow. The Wilky arm is missing and the volume pot is toast, so I'm bailing and calling it a "learning experience".

It will likely be hanging at the Roseville, MN GC next week. It will be interesting to see how they describe it and what they ask for it :D .

The search for a maple-boarded ash-bodied Daytona continues, then. I don't mind them heavy, either. Wish I hadn't sold my trans-green '93, but I know the next one will be awesome, assuming it is 100% Hamer. :D

Too bad, but once the bad taste is there it's nearly impossible to get past it.

I wasn't aware GC will fully reimburse locally. I may have to start browsing their used section more often now that the risk is minimized.
