Whats the Last 5 Albums you've bought?

I haven't bought an album since 2003, maybe earlier... I can't recall what it was.

I've bought some books on CD, do they count? lol.

Here I go, thinking I'm pretty hip because I'm listening to things like Propellerheads and Gwen Stefani and it turns out they're, like, so turn-of-the-millenium, you know? Sorry, the local rock station played "Valley Girl" yesterday. Good times, good times, those early 80s.

It's strange to buy and album. I was in a store (Target?) and checked the prices of a new CD. Something like $18 bucks! I don't think I've purchased a new CD in the last decade.

Anyway, the most recent albums I've acquired through downloads or swap-a-cd appear to be... (consults his Zune software... yes, I have a Zune. Its subscription service is worth the money. $15/month all you can eat from their catalog, plus 10 free tracks).

  1. Bob Dylan - Infidels
  2. Tab Benoit - Medicine
  3. J. Geils Band - Blow Your Face Out
  4. The Cat Empire - So Many Nights
  5. The Cult - Electric

Dude, big Propellerheads fan here. "Velvet Pants" is an electronica classic!

Music was pretty damn exciting in the late nineties, there's no denying it. The music of today by and large isn't worth a shit, there are many exceptions... but it's a song here and a band there. :P

No count! You're out. :P

It just comes into my mind that I have bought Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygen for 5 bucks at the local supermarket the other week or month.

WTF!?!?!?!

In America, we have the absolute worst albums in a bin at the supermarket, but in Deutschland they have Jean Michel Jarre?

Another indicator of how our culture is bankrupt in the US.

Idiot America, gotta love it.

Or, it's an example of how culturally rich America is, since the better music is selling out before making it to the supermarket bins.

In the event you're correct, at least we have those like you that are so far above it all that it still averages out in the end :P

curious, does this mean you stopped aquiring new music, or that you just stopped paying for it?

not flaming ya, serious question.

I bet it's the later! :P

PS: No judgement though. I am no saint, and I guess we all (even if many of us are working musicians) still download music illegally. My side, I just purchase albums from the bands I really like, as well as from some artists I want to support for some personal and/or philanthropic reasons.

I held out and didn't download any music for several years. I didn't mess with napster, kazaa, limewire or torrent networks. I still never have.

As an overworked and underpaid wedding DJ, I got in the habit of searching the blogs for all of the crap that I had to download... I did the iTunes for a couple of years and actually paid for it. the change came when the brides kept on directing me to limewire and wanted me to get the music from there when I would ask them for music that I had no intention of ever owning and would probably never use again. Some of the brides had very specific music tastes and for me to buy every song that the wedding parties wanted to hear was to take a significant portion of my earnings and throw it down the tube. I am not a wedding DJ anymore and I am damn well glad that I didn't have to pay for the entire Kenny Chesney catalog or every fucking Garth Brooks song he ever recorded. I snagged the rap junk too, I seldom paid for any music from 2006-2011.

Did I download music for my own listening pleasure? Not very much, I have a massive CD collection and went a little iTunes crazy from 2004-2006... there's not much I am into that I don't have.

I have strong opinions about corporations and profits going to the "man".

I also think that it is really not that difficult to police the internet and flag illegal download sites as an artist. All of the file sharing services that I use cave immediately upon the request of an artist or label to remove the illegal file... if an artist doesn't check to see if they are being pirated, they will be pirated, it's that simple.

The more savvy artists put the hammer down on piracy as it gets uploaded, it takes some manpower and time, but it can be done.

As a songwriter, I don't believe in charging for my music even though I'm not an established artist with any kind of credibility.

My native American ancestors had different visions of ownership than we do today. I tend to fall somewhere in between their way and the way of the white man.

Sorry for such a long explanation.

Shiver Me Timbers, Aaarrgghhh!!!!!!
