zorrow Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 We're considering playing a cover of Slayer's "Die by the sword", to be included in an album I'm producing. How should one proceed to do such a thing?TIA!
zorrow Posted October 10, 2011 Author Posted October 10, 2011 Found this: http://www.indieguide.com/wiki/page/Copyri...Songs_and_Loops.Will try to contact the band to be polite and ask for their permission, but I'm willing to pay the 8.5 cents per printed CD fee.Does anyone here know how to contact Jeff Hanneman personally, or at least Slayer's management?TIA!
gorch Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 I had thought there is a music authority that collects royalties.
zorrow Posted October 10, 2011 Author Posted October 10, 2011 I had thought there is a music authority that collects royalties.ASCAP is one of the main ones. But they say explicitly that they don't collect royalties for such things as covers --in whose case you have to contact the publisher/owner.
Bobby Marshall Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Seems strange not to get royalties on a cover. Some covers play more than the original versions.
geoff_hartwell Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 I have included covers on my last two albums. You don't need permission from the band/artist directly - it's a huge hassle and not worth the trouble. You can obtain mechanical license for just about anything from the Harry Fox Agency. You can even do it online 24/7. Go to Harry Fox Agency and click "license music". Good Luck, Geoff
Feynman Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Use the lawsuits and press to gain more fame.

zorrow Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 In Canada... http://www.cmrra.ca/Mechanical_Licensing/m..._licensing.htmlThanks Dion! Just checked it out, and it looks pretty straightforward. I think I'll go with that one.
Armitage Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 Yeah, it was about 9 cents per album pressed, sold of not.
