SteveB Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 I've been gassing for one of these things since they were announced, finally headed down to Wildwood to try one out and of course no way could I get out of there without one following me home. I love the comparative simplicity of these guitars. No flashy tops, just nice mahogany in a *very* thin transparent Nitro ( not poly ) finish. These guitars just breath, the ones I tried were some of the loudest solid-bodies acoustically that I have played. The sound of the guitar is nice and round, very jazzy and blusey in the neck pup as you might expect, although the HFS in the bridge is very hot. This will be a great guitar for "fusion" type situations where you want a nice jazz clean tone and a smooth, liquid lead tone. Its tone slots in perfectly between my '92 Alder bodied PRS Ce-24 and my Ibanez PM120 Pat Metheny. I'm very happy with this guitar. I go to PRS because of the 24 fret, 25" scale and offset double cut body which balances perfectly for me. Most of their recent stuff ( McCarty's, SingleCuts, etc ) haven't done much for me, but this is a very cool guitar.
iownit4 Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 nice I have few myself love 'em here is a 87 handmade by paul himself with a maple neck http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y110/iownit4/1029f3dd.jpg
serial Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 I kinda like the inlays too. What model is that?
cmatthes Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 That's a 20th Anniv. Custom 24 (or is that the 20th Standard 24? Can't tell w/this monitor).Same thing as the regular model basically, but has the anniversary bird inlays for 2005 only.
Jeff R Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 Love the finish! My Robin Ranger has a satin finish - I didn't like the look of it at first but it's grown on me, especially since I'm sure the ultra thin paint contributes a wholehelluva lot to the tones it produces. Big, loud, huge acoustically. I can wake the baby up with it unplugged.Congrats, TG!
silentman Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 A friend of mine just got a McCarty Hollowbody which I'm really digging. Some don't do it for me, but this PRS is special.
serial Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 I'll bet that finish would look great on a trans black. Anyone got pics of something in THAT finish?
bruce919 Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 If I had to sell all of my gear & just keep one guitar it would be my 1997 PRS McCarty Goldtop. It has some dings, the frets have some good wear on them. Hands down the best playing/sounding guitar I have ever owned. I have played many McCartys over the years & most all of them have been fantastic players. They have a different vibe then the rest of the PRS line. I have been GASing for one with a Rosewood neck but it will be while before I get one. Flamed Mahogany neck!!!!
MCChris Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 If I ever bought a PRS it would be a McCarty for sure.
DavidE Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 My McCarty is also an awesome guitar. Gets gigged a lot. If only it had the incredible PRS trem....
pesocaster Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 Aw man... they got the birds all crooked..... I'd take it back... ha ha ha
hardheartedbill Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 TG, I love it! The all mahogany set neck trem guitar is WAY up there for me, here's my McInturff take on the same style, mine is chambered and now has a set of Virtual P-90's, w the double row of screws
MCChris Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 Aw man... they got the birds all crooked..... I'd take it back... ha ha ha I think the string spacing is off.
SteveB Posted September 30, 2005 Author Posted September 30, 2005 I'll bet that finish would look great on a trans black.Anyone got pics of something in THAT finish? The funky bird inlays are for the 20th Anniversary special guitars. This is the 20th Anniversary Standard 24. Trans Charcoal is one of the 4 colors this guitar comes in ( along with Vintage Mahogany, Vintage Cherry, and Vintage Orange )
cmatthes Posted September 30, 2005 Posted September 30, 2005 If you want to "fix" those bird inlays, I have a set of REAL PRS birds that I picked up that I'd sell. They won't go cheap, but try to find another set without swiping them at a factory tour!!A few of the PRS guys used to supplement their income by turning up at guitar shows with stuff like inlaid truss rod covers, backplates, etc. that they worked on to hone their inlay techniques. I got some pretty cool stuff at early-mid 90s Maryland guitar shows that way. Paul and company have apparently clamped down hard on stuff like this since they moved across the Bay in '95.
