dewey finn Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Is there a Fuzz out there that works well with humbuckers? In my experience they only sound good with singles. What am I not trying? I am just curious never really heard one with buckers I liked.
bubs_42 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I went through this and its hard to pin down a fuzz box that will do what you "think" you want out of a fuzz box. Try the Way Huge Red Liama, Its a really hairy overdrive and may do the trick. For my "Fuzz" tones I use the Way Huge Pork Loin inline witha clean boost before it. Keeps everything fuzzy but your bottom end isn't useless.
dewey finn Posted May 2, 2012 Author Posted May 2, 2012 Thanks. I was asking because fuzz is really a cool effect and like you cited with hbs it turns to mush in the bass. Not really looking to add it to my color palette but was curious what people use.
Jeff R Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Katanasound Venomous Snake. Best fuzz and Octavia unit ever IMHO.
velorush Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I'm certainly no 'expert' (my only other fuzz was a 1976 Dallas Fuzz Face - it was a not-so-well-known reissue before reissues were reissues), but I bought a Lovepedal BBB-11 (Black Beauty Balance 2011) last year and it works for humbuckers quite nicely. It has Dallas Rangemaster and Ge Fuzz Face circuits in the same box with a pan knob to blend between the two. If it's too muddy (i.e., humbuckers + fuzz), turn the blend knob counterclockwise (more Rangemaster). If it's too thin, turn the bled knob clockwise (more Fuzz Face). Also has gain and volume knobs, each with a great deal of useable range.I'm not a boutique pedal guy, but this one was worth stepping up for just for the ability to hone in on the tone you need for each guitar / pickup combination. Here's an old web page on the '07 model. If Sean's out of them (again) they're on TGP Emporium and eBay occasionally; and there are some YouTube demos available. Other than that, I'm hearing good things about the Skreddy Lunar Module (Si) Fuzz, though I've never tried it myself.
polara Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I had good results with a black, cheap, Russian Big Muff. Keep the fuzz down and the level up if yer playing humbuckers and it is more musical sounding than the Way Huge Swollen Pickle or the Fuzz Factory.
Disturber Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Fulltone Catalyst. Great pedal. Works great as a clean boost, overdrive pedal and very usefull fuzztones. As you can set the mids, bass & treble it works very well with both singlecoils and humbuckers. With humbuckers it does a nasty Gibbons tone - if you want that, or just mean & wild fuzz. For strats it's very usefull, makes your strat sound "expensive".
