NGD - 77 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Pro

I don't want this to sound like the begining of a Penthouse letter but I swear I didn't intend on anything happening when I went into that guitar store...

It was on the wall, black slightly relic'd (natural relic) 77 Paul. It had been modified to have 2 humbuckers some time during its life (haven't lifted the pickups to see how the route job is yet) and according to the store has Classic 57's in it.

It played and sounded awesome, a bit of a beast but the tone! I think I played it for 45 minutes, with little breaks to walk around the store in a daze clutching it in my arms trying to decide. I thought the price was high since it was modified, but they wouldn't move on it since it had just gone out on the floor. I couldn't risk waiting, I had to have it!

What you think a fair price would be? I payed 1600. 1977 Gibson Les Paul - $1600, Forgiveness for yet another guitar purchase - Priceless; My wife is the greatest woman in the world! :-)

Mmm, nice! Those have an Ebony fingerboard, right? If you dig it and the wife is cool with it, price matters little I say.........

I would pay that for one right now if it was a good player.

One of the best Les Pauls I've owned (a bunch, from 50s Goldtops to recent reissues), was an Ebony '78 Deluxe. That thing was a killer.

+1 - While it might be fashionable to crap on the Norlin-era Gibbies, fact is, some of them are absolute tone monsters. Sure they messed around with different construction, materials, electronics, etc., but notwithstanding, some are real sleepers. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that people shun them as it keeps prices within reasonable range for the average Joe. ;)

It sounds like the store already looked and/or the previous owner informed them, but my old '76/'77 LP Deluxe, with the same S/N decal as yours, said Deluxe on the decal but had factory humbuckers so it was never routed...

This is why I resist plugging in guitars I like at stores. If I like the sound through an amp, it's over.

Might be a case of fond memories precluding the actual quality of the guitar, but I had a wine red Norlin-era LP Standard in high school that I'd kill to have back. Easily the piece of gear I most regret selling.

The Weird thing is my #1 for the last 10 years is a parker fly deluxe (strat scale length, super thin neck, light as a feather) and now I fall for this Gibson fat maple necked thing that weighs about the same as an aircraft carrier. I'm going to roll with it and see where it goes...thanks for all the comments

I bought a '74 Goldtop Deluxe about 5 years ago and paid more than that for it. Mine was all original and had the original case, but I'd still say you did OK.

My first LP was from the Norlin era... bought it brand new. As a punk kid, I was not aware of any quality issues with guitars from this time.. Maybe in the last 20 years I've become aware that some thought this period to be less than stellar. Kind of like 70's Fender basses... they were eveywhere at the time, but today seem to be considered hit ot miss.... I still want to get my hands on one some day. Could not really tell you why....other than as Chris mentions above, it must be memory related for me too.

I've always wanted a Norlin Pro Deluxe. I've had Customs (meh) and a couple of really nice Deluxes. Hell, I'd love an old Norlin Standard.

Further to this subject, I just changed strings so I took a peek at the pickup cavitys

Would I be correct in assuming this is not a factory route? (looks pretty tidy at least)

I was told by the store where I purchased it had been a P-90 that was routed for HB by a previous owner

Nope, not a factory route. Pro's had a pair stock P90s, ebony fretboard atop a maple neck. On paper that might sound like crap, but gawlee in practice...I loved the one I got to mess around with.

In the summer of 96, my buddy that ran the local music store let me borrow a black LP Pro for a couple of gigs. No way I could afford it back then, but damn if I still don't think about that guitar to this very day. Congrats on your new guitar!
