Locking Tuners

Caddie

Question

Posted

I have a '95 Studio, a '96 Artist, and a '95 Eclipse. I want to put locking tuners on them. I want something that is a pure clean replacement for the orig, existing Schaller tuners. No drilling new screw holes, no reaming current post holes. Unscrew n remove the orig tuners, drop in the new ones. Plus i want a higher gear ratio on them than the std tuners which I believe are either 12:1 or maybe 14:1?

Suggestions gents?

Thanks in advance.

If you have Schaller tuners on the guitars now, these are what you need to be "plug and play" with no drilling, reaming, etc.:

If you have standard full-size M6 tuners like these: SchallerM6_zps116a5b95.jpg

Then you need these: SchallerM6LockingTopMount_zpsc391ec2e.jpg

If you have M6 Minis like these: SchallerM6Mini_zps91cd661a.jpg

Then you need these: SchallerM6MiniLocking_zps070de647.jpg

If you have what Schaller calls "lug mount" M6 tuners like these: SchallerM6Lug_zps711b3356.jpg

Then you need these: SchallerM6Locking_zps990a42fc.jpg

My Phantom Custom and Mirage Maple Top both came from Hamer with the last style.

I believe all of those are 16:1 ratio.

Hold up, stand down!!! Don't let us forget that I have a new set sitting in my parts bin. I'll check which ones I have tonight but I think the holes are at 45 and not 90, but i'll check.

I'll PM you tonight Caddie. My Parts Drawer is getting ready to be unloaded of all unused items.

I've become a fan of these:

Edited to add: I do understand my post is slightly OT here, but anyway. I'd strongly consider these ones on my new guitars.

Genius! I like to think of the screwhole tab as being:

1). parallel to the tuning post

2). 90 degree angle from the post (perpendicular)

3). at a 45 degree angle from the tuning post (angled)

And this is all looking at them from above like Bloozguy's post above.

Schaller only has available in the US the locking tuners that have 45 degree screw tabs (angled)... they make top locking M6 tuners that have either the perpendicular or parrallel screw tabs. Thomann might have the top locking tuners in Europe, but not one US distributor has access to the top locking tuners here in the states.

The Schaller locking tuners available in the US are NOT retrofit for Hamers... you will have to drill a new hole and fill the old one.

On the cheap side... Planet Waves makes a direct retrofit locking tuner... on the nice side, Grover does too. Just forget about Schaller if you're in the US and looking for exact retrofit locking tuners for Hamer guitars.

Great posts, Bloozguy/Zen. There IS another option, but these tuners, like the Euro-only Schallers, aren't generally available in the U.S.: Gotoh (Japan)

Some vendors on eBay carry them, or you can order them directly from their webstore for boocoo bucks. Tuners sets are available in standard, locking, height-adjustable and height-adj. locking. There are sets that retrofit both Grover Rotomatics, Minis, Schaller M6, M6 minis, etc. Each set of tuners has many photos and schematics (it helps to have a metric ruler on the consumer end), including optional button choices. Make sure you do your homework (measuring the stock tuners you're replacing) before ordering. You should be able to find a set that wont require drilling/reaming of your guitar's headstock.

Allparts carry some of these tuners, and they may be able to order items they don't stock. Australia Luthier's Supply on eBay carry many Gotoh products not readily available in the U.S.
