hamerhead Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Same deal - I want them for my daughters. I've seen some with phone charger outlets on them, but they looked pretty cheap. I'd rather get them something that's built better and will last.Anything?
G Man Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 LL Bean sells a crank light that also does solar and will sit like a lantern. And being an LL Bean product, it can be returned easily enough if something goes wrong with it.
JohnnyB Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I have one of those LL Bean crank lights. No USB port though. We also have a crank radio with built-in flashlight and USB recharging port. We acquired them for an emergency preparedness display at a health fair. The LL Bean flashlight has a nice feel to it. IIRC it was about $15.
Armitage Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I can't imagine how long you'd have to crank to charge a phone. But I guess of you're just trying to make one call it wouldn't be bad. In China everyone has a "Battery/Charger" basically a separate battery in their pocket or purse with a USB cable. Whenever they stop to sit down and play with their phone, they plug it in. Not so much to charge their phone, but to use it to keep their phone from running down while surfing for half an hour on the bus or in the subway etc.In the winter I usually have a spare charged battery in my coat pocket just in case, but now I have one of these.
RichRS6 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I prefer my crank to be full strength, none of this light business.
hamerhead Posted December 5, 2012 Author Posted December 5, 2012 You give that to one of my daughters and we're gonna have problems.
a.bandini Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 I've got a couple LLBean crank flashlights. The gears from the crank to the generator are nylon, and the teeth in the gears strip easily. LLBean will take it back and replace it without issue, but I think you are going to have that same fundamental problem with any product you buy. Good luck!
Armitage Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 They seem to be products designed to sit on your shelf, not to ever actually be used.
specialk Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 I've had one of these for a while, been on lots of camping trips, and it still works okay. I'd buy another if I needed one:http://www.cabelas.com/product/etn-FRX2-Weather-Alert-Radio/1360259.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fcompare_items.jsp%3FcategoryIds%3D%26entityId%3D1327170%26entityId%3D1360259
