Equipment OUTDOORS cons?

Hey,

My sound business (theatre), is getting to be a real bugger to keep moving in/out of my house. I would love to find a storage unit to put stuff in. But, Jan/Feb are brutal here. Mostly PA stuff. mixers, headsets, wireless racks, etc...

Anyone find that being frigid wears on equipment?

I won't be pulling it to a job and plugging in fast. Usually would be allowed plenty of time to acclimate before hand.

what say?

There are all kinds of storage facilities in my area, and some are even more like indoor closets, vs garage type. How about one of those?

I just pulled a tube amp out of a detached storaged shed... had probably been in there 5 to 10 years. No issues at all. Inside of the amp was exceptionally clean.

There are indoor storage facilities and also climate-controlled indoor storage facilities. I suspect the rent for a climate-controlled facility would be a bit more where you live than it is where I live.

I don't think the problem is the cold itself so much as it is additional humidity and condensation on top of that, at least as far as electronics go. It seems to me that drastic temperature and humidity swings are the culprit (think of your car...if you get up early enough, and the climate is damp enough, it'll either be wet or frosty, yes?). Climate control is the way to go if you want to be absolutely OK.

we kept our acoustic duo stuff (mains/monitors/powered mixers/mics/cables/stands/lights) in an unheated storage unit for 4-5 years w/o any problems. no guitars or tube amps were kept there.

edit: NC winters get cold, but not MN cold.

Seems like condensation, once gear is inside, would be the biggest issue.

Climate controlled sounds like a better option.

Public Storage has 5x5 indoor units for about $55/month, versus 5x5 outdoor unit for about $36/month.

MN winters can be a BITCH!

Back in the day we used to keep the band trailer in an unheated storage garage.

No guitars, tube amps.

Never had a problem as long as things could warm up for a hour or so.

South Dakotas' almost as cold as Minnestota.
