Not meaning to rub it in but I bought this a few weeks ago. I personally don't care for the finish and bought it with the intent of having it refinished in another color. Not buckers but I see what you mean by calling it a great guitar. Not the best pics, used a smart phone, bad lighting, operator incompetence, etc. but you can get the gist of it.

here this is real close..especially the neck if the face of the headstock was same color .... I think you get the idea..so lets hear what everyone would call this color...we all know I been calling it tv yellow...but would a white turn this bad?

TV Yellow is not an opaque finish. You can see the woodgrain through the color.

Here is an '83 Jazz Bass shot in lacquer where you can see the color shift....original,white under the removed pickguard and almost a TV yellow everywhere else. The shot w/o pickguard color is a little off....other shot shows actual yellow better.

This was actually a solid Olympic White when new. TV yellow is translucent and the wood grain shows through.

Also a shot of a mid-90s Hamer 3 pickup Eclipse I had in TV yellow....and a fretless '83 Hamer Cruisebass that IS originally factory Yellow.

BTW...I recently also, picked up an '82 Hamer Cruisebass that the former owner had since 1985 and he swore it was "yellow." When it got here, I pulled it apart to see it was actually a yellowed out original solid white nitro. So, it had yellowed out so much in its first three years that the second owner had it for nearly 30 years convinced it was originally yellow.

So....yes, very easy to confuse white and yellow on 30 year old nitro finishes sometimes.

yeah mine would have been 8-9 yrs old when I got it...and I never pulled the pups to see if it was lighter in the holes.....so ok I might be looking for white then......but I think the matching color headstock face is the basic trait..wheather we call it white or cream or yellow..I see most headstocks are black...so was the white face make it a special "special"...like as in ordered special not short bus special.

That Olympic White Jazz Bass is gorgeous.

So is the Les Paul Custom, shown earlier. That one was definitely white, originally. The nitro clear coat on those yellows very easily (witness Randy Rhoads' LPC, or Alex Lifeson's ES-355 (before he had it refinished - and ruined, in my opinion!)).

I've mentioned it before, but my first, in-person Hamer experience was when my guitar teacher's store took delivery of three factory-fresh Specials, in the very early eighties. One was a tobacco sunburst, the next was an almost burgundy mist-type opaque metallic finish, and the third was yellow. I don't recall it being a flametop, but rather a lighter opaque yellow, possibly also a slightly metallic finish. Certainly, two of those were colors that I never saw again. These had the checkerboard headstock logo.

I was there for the unboxing, and can still distinctly recall the smell. Magic!

If anyone has access to the ledgers from that era, they were shipped to the (long, long defunct) "Musician's World" in Butler, NJ.

yeah I am not sure I look at that fretless bass^^^^ and it could have been that yellow...I do know the shop had it a long time and the owner said he took it in on trade becuase the guy didn't like the color...I for the most part dont care about color but it seems the harder I look for another or even the one..its a ghost..makes me want it more,,,, <_<

Ok first I want to shout out a big THANKS to...g-man,polara,matchful...for either hooking me up with a 1981 special or helping me get one bought off craigslist half way across the country.

after that I want say....

I am in love with it all over again..I now know why I been holding on to this flame for so many years...this is my neck.

I even wondered if I made too big a deal of it all these years and I was going be let down by my memory(wouldnt be the first time) that the guitar was as great as I remembered...I was right to hold on,because its better than I remember and I wish I had hunted one of these down 10 yrs ago..thanks again to all who have helped put a pleasure to play back in my hands

so I know I said I was done but my wheels of creation have been churning...So if any one has a 1981-2 special that is a basket case or just plain beat let me know...I have an idea or two from talking to bcr greg that I would like work up..

I would also be interested in any other hamer project guitars that have the same neck profile as specials.

Glad to hear you like it, its a great guitar which I am sure I will miss as the years go by, but you can't keep them all.
