Bang-for-buck chainsaw recommendations

Jeff R

Question

Posted

The thread title speaks for itself. I want to get a solid, reliable and relatively affordable chainsaw for taking out the oak limbs hovering over my home, to create firewood out of some thick limbs I requested be left behind when Von and I recently got a mature pecan downed in the backyard by a pro tree guy, things like that.

I don't know what I'm looking for as far as recommended engine HP, blade length/width, etc., but I know a bunch of you clowns have the answers I seek.

Spill.

STIHL Chainsaws. ALL DAY LONG.

I have used and abused the piss out of my Farm Boss. Bought it new in 1993 - tuned it once, but never been rebuilt. Several major storms and huge trees - literally more chains than I can count.

STIHL wins hands down.

Stihl

I bought mine in 1990. It was gone over about eight years ago. I have cut down numerous trees in the 8-12 inch diameter range and lsome a bit larger. It i still cranking. One of the best purchases I ever made.

Go to a Stihl dealer and explain your requirements.

+100 Stihl is the shit.

Poulan has a big name but the family went through two out at our country place and the Stihl kept on going. Haven't had to use mine all that much, but when I first got it it did yeoman's work cleaning up after a hurricane.

The best bang for you bucks chainsaw, bar none, is your neighbors... Oh and only give it back when he asks. Maybe he'll forget and move away...

Haha ... the one in my workroom right now is a small Stihl I borrowed from good friend Kajun Kelly. My neighbor across the street, Mark, is a landscaper by trade and he has one saw, I forget the brand, but it looks like it's big enough to take down sequoias and redwoods. That's why I figured I'd sit back and hear out all you guys' recommendations - it's not like I'm in a big rush to make a purchase asap :)

Edited to add: Mark's big saw is an Echo I'm pretty sure. My weed whacker is an Echo and I've been very happy with it (starts like a charm) but I have no experience with any of their other products.
