Computer Monitor Issues

Question

Tower is working fine but I am typing this blind. My monitor is blank but if I turn it off and on, I can see what is up for about three seconds, or long enough to have checked these few sentences four times to read it back. Computer is an HPMonitor is an HP 2010  New monitor time or????. And now it just came on. It has been flickering the last 24 hours or so. Flickering as I type.

When I tried Windows offer of Win10 free it told me my graphics would not run 10 so I guess it might be time for a new deal huh?

I believe the upgrade was referring your video card, not the monitor. But that's not what is causing your monitor to blink unless it corrupted a driver in the process of the failed upgrade. Easiest thing to do first is check the cable connections to your PC and to the monitor. If that looks fine it would help you if you have another PC or laptop you can plug it into. It it works then it's not your monitor. It's either a corrupt driver or a bad video card. No reason to change your PC if you are happy with the performance. Cards are cheap and easy to install. I'd be happy to do it for you for a Cod Fish dinner. Or a Burrito.

While a corrupted driver or video card during the upgrade is possible, I'd look into the monitor first.  For what it's worth, mine behaved just the same way (with no upgrades or anything involved), just before it went kaput completely.

If you have laptop, even, with the appropriate connections you can try the monitor on that.

Not upgrade related. Went to my storage space and got an old monitor I have and it is working great. Guess that other one is just done. When it came on visually there is a high pitched whine. then it goes back blank after about 4 seconds. So... I'm good for the minute.

Might use that time to look into the newest deal. I have had my current tower and monitor since 2011 at least. Might hve a talk with Thorn and another friend about this.

Thanks for the input. B)

Is this an LCD or a CRT monitor? Kinda strange for an LCD to make any type of whine.

Is the cable on the back wired directly to the monitor, or detachable? a lot of manufacturers send totally crap cables with their monitors, and replacing them can make them work a ton better.  Of course most new monitors are now HDMI, which pretty much negates a lot of what I just said.

Cable is detatched. It is a flat type monitor and I will guess it is LCD.

Think I will look into a new monitor. Or maybe hit a pawn shop and get a deal on a bigger slightly used one.

I have a lab at one of my schools where the LCD monitors are dropping like flies. They come on for a split second and then go black. They are probably 7 years old and pretty much stay on ALL THE TIME. After researching the issue, I found that the backlight inverter is the culprit. In my case, not worth fixing. We get a lot of donated monitors so I just grab another.
