Studio Custom Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 People change, their interests change, it's natural. Once upon a time I was an above average golfer, I wasn't improving, my group of cohorts had family issues and it just lost its fun factor, so I haven't played in years, same with skiing. Can I say I'll never do either again? No, but I'm quite certain I'll never be into them as I once was. I've met lots of guys who use to play who've lost their desire to deal with typical band issues, so they move on. I've been lucky to be in the same band since 1993, otherwise who knows if I'd still be at it. Let's not diagnose the new guy just quite yet. 👌

You want to talk about regrets...I could have been somebody, too. I have professional-level musical entertainment ability, but just kept making the wrong choices, the "safe" choices. But it's all good, because what I really love about music is performing. Playing. Touching people through music. I don't do it anywhere near as much as I used to, and I still am planning on getting back into it when life slows down a little bit. But until then, I keep playing, I keep singing, I keep writing, and most of all: I keep *learning*. You stay young if you keep your learning activity high. We tell all the little kids, "you can be *anything* you want when you grow up", but 99% of the people in the world end up working at Initech, hoping to get crippled in a car accident so we don't have to go to work anymore. So you didn't make it as a professional musician. So what? You don't have to be famous or professional to enjoy playing. You certainly don't have to be famous or professional to have other people enjoy your playing. I can see simplifying down to just a guitar and an amp, but if you sell everything, I guarantee you will regret it. Most decisions made on the basis of emotion are wrong. Dude. Thank you. You hit a lot dead on the head.

I say sell it all, but you're a big boy and I trust you to make the right decision for you. There is a hell of a lot of nurturing going on here, from many strangers to one stranger. I get it, people "ain't got no time fo-dat". I think it maybe what seperates us artists. I paid my dues, I might me leaning on the team right now, but I take nothing for granted.
killerteddybear Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 My 2 cents. I was NEVER going to be a professional musician. My life was already committed in other directions. I turned 60 a few days ago; I've been playing on and off for +/-45 years. I'm a decent bassist and a poor guitarist. But it still thrills me to pick up an instrument and coax something musical out of it. If you have any of that left in you then you owe it to yourself to keep at least one instrument around. They're not prisoners: they're patiently waiting for YOU.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Not to mention, there are so many assholes like me, there's greater than a 50% chance you sell your SS to someone who won't play it much, either.
jaded_musician Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Guitars are meant to be hoarded. My wife buys shoes she never wears, but I don't think they are stressed out wishing for a better life.
Sugartune Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Sell 'em all and let the guitar gods sort you out.

Johnisonic Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 I don't know if I'm selling of not....it's not about money. It's been cool to talk to some Hamer people, Steve Stevens people, just talking guitars again has been cool. I honestly can say I have never been involved with any music forums at all. I should pull out some of my old guitar player magazines from the 80's with Steve on them, but I'm trying not to get too excited about all this. I'm sorry if I'm messing with your vibe of whatever around here, it's been pretty awesome to me to see there are people into what I thought was long dead. Imagine walking around your local Home Depot and rolling up on someone wearing a Hamer t-shirt....that's where I am right about now.

Not as a guitarist, if that helps. For everyone person that makes it rich in entertainment, there are at least 100 just as good that make it but don't make it big. For every person that even makes it enough to get a recording deal, there are another 1000 just as good that don't get a deal. I was one of the top 25 bass/baritones in the entire northwest. I was a music major. I played with people who were professionals. I know what it takes to be a professional, and I had the talent. But lots of people have the talent. What I didn't do was put in the work. The original poster put in the work, and even without hearing him play, I wouldn't be surprised if he was good enough, and probably even better than some who did make it. But luck plays a part of who makes it and who doesn't, either. I was one of the best in my entire music program (at two different universities, actually) at sight reading. I was respected for my ability to make music and entertain, even though I wasn't the most technically gifted. So, yeah: I know what I'm talking about in this. Even if I can't keep up with almost anyone on this board on guitar.
