Stike Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 I picked up an old Centaura body and neck. Was wondering if having a Hamer ( Schaller? ) Floyd would make it more desirable post restoration or should I just say fuck it and get a new Gotoh or OFR?
cmatthes Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 It might make a small difference in price, but I'm not sure originality matters all that much if it's being totally redone/upgraded.
diablo175 Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 What's your objective? Is this for your own use or for an eventual flip? Hamer stamped Floyds have suffered from stripped out saddle block screw holes due to the softer metal in the base plate. The later model Schallers have fixed it with hardened steel inserts but they lack the Hamer stamp. They also have shorter, wider diameter string screws. If you want to switch to an OFR or Gotch, you'l need to either extend the rout on the recess or get some shorter screws for the OFR. Schaller will sell you some directly if you contact them. Not sure if they work with the Gotohs.
DBraz Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 If I were you I'd try and source a Hamer stamped Schaller. I agree with Chis's assessment and from a cost point of view finding a half decent Hamer stamped Floyd would be preferable. Personally I think the Schaller Lockmeister's are the best Floyd's out there but a new one is probably twice the price of what I've been paying for Hamer stamped Floyd's in good condition.

zenmindbeginner Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 I use mine religiously... no problems, never had even one issue and I have several well used Hamer stamped Floyds. They do need to be taken apart, cleaned/oiled and put back together... I buy new new saddle mounting screws and string blocks though.
tbonesullivan Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 I got a new Schaller floyd from stewmac, and the only difference I found between it and the stock hamer branded floyd was the inserts and logo. The string retaining bolts were identical to the ones on the Diablo originally.

I have an older black that has some plating coming off that I'll just give to you. I have HFC love given to me that I need to pass on. I used to have Photobucket pics of it but they are gone. I'll track it down and take a shot or two for ya.
