santellavision Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 First off, let me say, if you dig DIY Solderless cables, then great. This is just one guys experience... I was using George L's for quite a while. I had a huge board (1st pic of old board) with all George L's Solderless cables. They worked pretty well, but a cable now and then failed. Mostly from plugging and unplugging new stompboxes. One here and there over 5 years isn't too bad when you carry your gear around. But then, I had my board go down hard in the middle of a gig. I couldn't find the bad cable. I literally pulled half my pedals off the board and hard-wired them to finish the gig. SUCKED! So, I'm now using the Rockboard Flat cables and they've been great. Actually more than great, they are smaller and I can squeeze on another pedal or two now! Then, I tried the 3 Monkeys Solderless Pedalboard power kit. They seemed to work OK, but I just had one cable go down at band rehearsal. CRAP. This is way worse than 1/4" audio. When one of these 9v cables goes bad, it takes down the entire board as it shorts out the Power supply. I really wanted these to work as it lets you keep your board really clean with less excess wire. Oh, well, back to the cheap black cables that come with the power supplies. **** Side note: I keep one of these little battery power supplies and some cables in my gig bag. Great for 9v power emergencies!!) ***** Just my 2.5¢. Ernie
Sugartune Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Thanks for the info. I’ve been waiting for those flat cables, but have a solderless setup for now. I’m using lava tightrope, have been for a few years. Won’t again, for different reasons. Those are the answer. Been waiting for a TRS cable like that too.
tbonesullivan Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 I haven't had any trouble with signal cables, but power cables just seems like a different story. I'd rather have individual cables per pedal from a central distribution point.
santellavision Posted August 3, 2018 Author Posted August 3, 2018 I wasn’t running the 9v cables daisy-chained. They were all single cables running to my 10 output Decible Hot Stone Deluxe power supply. Even one single cable shorting out, shut down the entire rig. Bad!
tbonesullivan Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 Whoa! That sucks! Wow that really does. How do you like the Line 6 M9? I've been looking for something that can do multiple effects in that kind of format, and was primarily looking at the Zoom G3n, but the Line 6 pedal modelers have me intrigued. Sure they don't have the individual LCDs for each effect, but the sound quality would probably be better IMHO.

It's just great to have 6 effects right there. I only use time-based effects like Delay, Flange, Trem, Reverb etc. I run it my EFX Loop. It's pretty clean in the signal path but, a tiny bit of tone degradation. Live, you'd never hear the slight difference in tone in the loop. The convenience is way worth it. I've been toying with sending it to this company JVH3 to mod it. (It's supposed to make it a bit cleaner.) I just haven't had time to pull it off and send it. One other minor nag is it has a A/C power supply that you have to deal with under your board. (You can see it in my last pic above)
bubs_42 Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 @santellavision I'm perfectly happy with my 3 Monkeys Cables, especially the DC Cables. The G L Cables i'm not a huge fan of, but I haven't phased them out. What I would like to get is a voodoo labs loop pedal for ease of not having to step over the pedals. What is the one you are currently using in picture one?
santellavision Posted August 3, 2018 Author Posted August 3, 2018 It's a One Control unit. Really nice. I have had a couple of different ones. My current on is the XENAGAMA, which is 3 loops and Tuner out. They work great. I've also had great luck with a simpler one from Road Rage pedals.
cmatthes Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 I'm also a fan of the 3Monkeys cables - both the power and the patch cables. Did you reach out to Greg or Ossie to ask about that? I'm sure they'd want to know, and could help determine what may have caused your issue.
santellavision Posted August 3, 2018 Author Posted August 3, 2018 I didn't message them. I think I will. I've watched their videos on how to cut and thread the cables correctly. I had good luck for a while, then when the one power cable shorted, the entire pedalboard went down. Not good to try to trace which one of 10 cables to replace during the middle of a set.
