Tortious Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 Some cool stuff. Lots of Ibanez, as expected, but of particular interest to this lot: https://www.vai.com/guitars/hamercustom-sv-hamer-w-monkey-grip-blond-finish/ Type: PRE-JEM Status: SOLD or GIFTED SV number: SV 81 Pet name: Olger Year: ? Serial: 616753 Receive date: For Sale: Comments: Sold by Greg Dorsett Jan 2018. This was one of the prototypes that Steve recieved back when he was checking out various companies to make the Jem. Many of the top guitar companies in the early 80’s were interested in having Steve endourse their instruments. He gave them all the specs for the Jem and he recieved back these companies idea of what that meant. This was the prototype that Hamer made for him. Someone did a lot of work putting everything together. https://www.vai.com/guitars/
Steve Haynie Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 What is the white thing between the grip and the bridge?

Jeff R Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 Vai put that pad on all his non-recessed Floyds so his hand would feel string height relative to the body similar to a stock strat, which is what he learned guitar on. The Green Meanie and his Soloists had similar pads. His Jems didn't because Ibanez integrated a recessed trem design to simulate the strat string height. That's why Ibanez got the gig and others didn't IMHO ... Ibanez did their homework on the guy and tried to build "his" guitar, not sell him on a guitar they already made, like, eh, the stock Chap above with an added hand grip cut in it.
Travis Posted February 23, 2019 Posted February 23, 2019 I have never liked recessed trems. I’ve had a couple of Ibanez 7 strings with a recessed edge and they didn’t last too long. Probably because my first pro level guitar had a top mount Floyd. I mean, I get that I’m not Vai and. It at all anywhere near his level. Now, I don’t even know why I’m commenting on this...
