Short Scale Super Strats?

Recommended Posts

I know some of the Chaps are short scale, but wondering what others folks have played that they like or if there are some I don't know about:

Chaparrals (set neck), Caparison Horus, Valley Arts, Jackson/Charvel Fusion, Peavey Vandenberg and Kramer Nightswan are the ones I can think of.

What's the point? Waste of wood and wire. 😆:P  Go  Fender scale or go home.

Jeez, what were you waiting for that?   Just looking for info and maybe something a bit different.

Just some b-day margarita's talkin', scottcald. Just busting balls. ;)  I really don't give a rat's patootie. If short scale works for anyone, good on 'em.

Set neck Chaps came in both scales depending on the years - early setnecks short, later ones long I believe. Mine's an '89, so long scale. I love it but think the shorter scales look more bad ass, but never played one.

Wasn't the Fender HM Strats 25"? So, kind of in the middle. I think the Peavey Destiny (and possibly some others) were also short scale, but not sure. I had a Destiny but can't remember the details.

Just bustin’ back. That’s part of the charm of the HFC. Happy B’day!  Sounds like you’ve had a short scale. What was it and what didn’t work?

Cool, thanks. Yeah, seems Peavey made a few short scale instruments.

Chaps went to 25.5" in '87. Two full model years were Gibson scale.

Charvel and Jackson Fusion models for sure. Probably some other import Charvel models, as well. Seems like there was a shorter scale Gibson in the '80s as well; the Victory? I think '80s Carvins might have been. 24.75.

 Charvel 750xl

24 fret, short scale, thick mahogany body with maple cap (trans finishes) with a maple neck.

I had 3 of them at one time, 2 were sequential serial numbers. All of mine were tune o matic with strings thru which were a little more rare than the floyded version. made for 1 year in 1989...

Very cool.  Didn't know about those.  Thanks!

Thanks, forgot about the Gibson stuff.

These were the 3 I had. The left and the middle had sequential serial numbers. I thought that the middle one had the best top but the plain top on the right was the best playing/sounding of them all. Got them all in the $500 range back in the early 2000’s. The price has gone up significantly since... Like I said, mahogany back with maple tops on the trans finishes. The solid colors were sometimes alder, sometimes poplar, maybe mahogany. Basically, whatever they had lying around...

japanese made but absolute top of the line and would go against any USA made Jackson of the time.  Made in ‘89 only and then was transitioned into the Jackson soloist archtop, but with a thinner body.

I've had quite a few, Hamers included. Back before I even achieved this hard fought for level of sub-mediocre skill :P I found short scale to be perfectly fine in all aspects except when trying to play in frets above the 14th. Not their fault; my meat hooks just aren't delicate enough to shoehorn in there. 😆 To be honest, I wish I could get on with short scale axes because there are some VERY sweet ones out there. The early set neck Chap, Charvel 750 XL and Jackson Fusion mentioned above, being a few of them.

25" on the first version, 25.15" (?!?) on the second version. I played them when shopping for my first electric in 1991. There was also a weird (HM?) Strat Plus, with HSS Lace Sensors (not exactly HM), but I don't recall if that was an HM or Plus model, so either 25.15 or 25.5. I do remember it wasn't good as either a Strat or a Super Strat!

Yeah, that 25.1" thing is odd, I wonder why they came up with that?  The new ones also come with the Floyd Special, which, to me for $1200, they could at least go to the 1000 series.

If I had to hazard a guess, maybe it would be to keep folks from swapping parts from/to the original runs and possibly passing off fake old versions which now command some half decent coin. Maybe. I dunno.

+1 on the FR 1000 Series (at the very least) for a $1200 guitar. And put some f*cking decent name brand p'ups in there while they're at it!!! 😤

Maybe they're trying to make this new run in demand in 25 years. Yeah, that is lame about the pickups, at least the bridge.  And, this might be just me, but two tone controls always seemed out of place on that.

There appears to be no logical answer. Figured it might be a metric conversion simplification thing, but neither 25.1" nor 25.15" convert to whole millimeters. Guess what standard scale length does convert neatly to half centimeters and whole millimeters?

25.0"

Go figure.

25, 25.1 - whatever it takes.

How'd you like the Destiny? That was a set neck, wasn't it?

Yes, I bought it because I couldn't afford what I really wanted; a Hamer Chaparral! It was set neck, or actually I think it was neck thru. Anyway, it was made of poplar which isn't my favorite. Quality was quite good but down from Hamer. It had a nice white pearl finish and a Kahler Spyder trim which I thought was just fine, all black hardware. HSS pickups we're fine but might of benefitted from upgrading. Rosewood fretboard. I liked the body shape and contours. I think USA Peavey's are a good value but like Hamers better. My favorite Peavey I ever played was a Falcon, strat copy, that thing played great!

Why they went with 25.15" never made sense to me for 2 reasons:

1) As Biz Prof said, 25.0 converts nicely to metric. 0.15 does not!

2) 25.125" is exactly halfway between 24.75 and 25.5. If you wanted the middle, use the right number!

Thanks, Nathan, should've figured Yamaha had some.

Cool, thanks for the info.  I see some of those Falcons for like $150 on Reverb.  That's insanely cheap for a USA made guitar.

Yeah, definitely odd.

The Valley Arts Custom Pro came in 25.5" and 24.75" scale. I think Kramer had a 24.75" scale guitar model too, ProAxe?

Didn’t realize the ProAxe was short scale. Thanks!
