bubs_42 Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 First thanks to @hamerhead for loaning me a Timmy so I could do this shoot out. Now some of you may know the internet says that the OD11 is a direct ripoff of the Timmy. I recently tried the Mini Timmy and was not impressed at all. So I reached out to Tim and he sent me one of his Timmys and here is what I found. Right off the start the I found that the OD11 was more user friendly than the Timmy, the controls work as you would expect on most pedals. VTMB work from 0-10 on the knob, but the Timmy is like a Bass Cut Knob and a Treble "Boost". So the the higher the bass knob, less bass, the lower the treble knob the less treble. But once that was out of the way I just turned the knobs until I heard what I wanted to hear (Switch in Middle Position), then stepped on my already set up OD11. This is what I was hearing: The Timmy sounded clearer, with more definition, and a touch more sparkle, but I was able to adjust the OD11 to be really really close. After a bit, I could to get them to sound exactly the same using only my ears and not my eyes. So I switch the Timmy's switch to the up position and that is when the things got interesting. I could almost get them to sound indistinguishable from each other. I think I would fail a blindfold test for sure. Getting to that point was pretty easy, it didn't take that long to find my way. Almost too easy. So where do the differences come in? Like I said the bass and tone knobs are different, the Timmy has the switch (I like it best in the middle), the OD has way more volume push, the Timmy has more gain and the gain know is very sensitive. I think the Timmy does the lower gain stuff extremely well, with this more open, pleasing top end. I think the pedal just sounds like it has a clearer signal path, that is how I would put it. The Timmy will drive the snot out of an amp, but the OD11 pretty much sounds natural with the gain up or down, it sounds more like part of the amp, no better, no worse. The Timmy is an improvement, its adds that extra little something, that you can't put your finger on, but your glad its there. Below are the settings that I like best in front of my Route 66 that is already clipping, and both pedals were used to add a little grit, brightness and and bring back a little bass tossed by attenuation.
RobB Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 I like all my LPs. I can’t use them with a clean amp because of the volume knob. It goes from zero to RAWWWWHHRRRR at the minimal setting. It’s a problem and I’m not sure what to do about it.
bubs_42 Posted June 15, 2021 Author Posted June 15, 2021 Mine is set at 9o’clock Or a smidge under 95 percent of the time.

Not that I know of, I’ve had zero reasons to look though. I just run them down low. Even the Tchula is almost too much for my taste since the first side is set at half way. The Les Luis with each side barely cracked open is about just right for boost and goose.

I have always wanted to try the Timmy but I am so happy with the OD11 and others that I just don’t feel the need to buy something so similar.

One more run through tomorrow we will do a cleaner amp with greater headroom and more pedal.
soli'd Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 IIRC the tone knobs on the Timmy working backwards (I think it's both bass & treb that operate that way) was due to PaulC just liking the way the particular chosen pot sounded/reacted in the circuit, and that pot happened to be reverse-taper or something to that effect. FWIW, the recent v3 Timmy has normally functioning EQ pots. And more gain if you want it. Really great sounding pedal and a bit more intuitive in its operation.

I love my LP through a clean channel for a slightly broken up lead tone, but the volume jump is so much that I have to up that channel specifically for that sound. If I roll the volume off the LP for the clean channel, it no longer has enough grunt to work as a lead boost on my dirt channels. Since that is what I use it for 95% of the time it's on, I just forego ever boosting my clean channel with it, which is a pity because it sounds awesome.

That is what I typically do on most LPs, but it depends on the pedal…
bubs_42 Posted June 16, 2021 Author Posted June 16, 2021 Cleaner amp, more pedal = a tighter comparison. I will say they sound similar, but not exact. The Timmy just has a bit more sparkle, just that little something different. I’m pretty much splitting hairs at this point. If you don’t have $250 for a Timmy try the OD11.

I feel like you lose a little compression that makes cleaner lines pop a little more.
RobB Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 Welp, I’ll be housesitting for three days next week, so I’ll have that time to properly wring out the AMP11 with the Valvetech. Maybe spending more time with it is the key..?0

Only I could transpose the drive and level controls. Works just like I was hoping now. Welp, I’m an idiot…
Jakeboy Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Both my OD11 and BOA v1 work well with the Valvetech here.
