Slowly degrading foam padding, meet nitrocelluose finish. With any luck, it'll just crumble off of the neck. The neck finish, on the other hand...well, no way of knowing what's going on under that crud until it's scraped off.

Don Felder gave an interview to a guitar magazine (probably GP) around the time that Hell froze over and in that dialogue, he mentioned getting one of his doubleneck guitars out of its road case for refurbishing in prep for a potential tour and discovering that the lacquer had cooked into the protective lining of the case. My reaction to the Allen Collins guitars was presumptive of Gibson's Custom Shop having recreated this type of damage on the facsimile of his iconic Explorer. Perhaps it was just a reclic'd Gibson CS guitar that the owner allowed to sit in the case too long. If it was crafted during the Henry era, then I'd be inclined to believe the former.
Tortious Posted June 22, 2022 Posted June 22, 2022 Heritage (not the guitar company) has another auction coming up. https://entertainment.ha.com/c/search-results.zx?N=3189+793+794+791+792+2088+4294941891&ic=Items-OpenAuctions-Open-BrowseViewLots-071713 I had some interest in this: https://entertainment.ha.com/itm/vintage-guitars-and-musical-instruments/1993-gibson-custom-shop-explorer-zebra-solid-body-electric-guitar-serial-91693755/a/7275-85043.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515 Then I looked a little closer at the picture of the front. The lower 3 strings do not align properly. It looks like both the saddles and the nut were cut incorrectly. Not only is the low E far from the edge of the fretboard, the D is almost directly over the dot inlays, while the G looks like it's somewhat close to where it's supposed to be. I can see why it's in good condition, it's fucking unplayable. The picture on the site can be viewed a lot closer up. Anyway, lots of other shit to pay dearly for there. A few interesting things with low-ish starting bids that likely will not stay there, and of course, there's always buyers premiums and maximum-cost shipping! Buy buy buy!!

As intriguing as it may be, I've had enough 'project' stuff that I can't be bothered. I'm glad I saw it, reduces temptation significantly. I'm sure that needs a nut also, and set of Gravelins. And I just got a new Explorer (that I promptly dented) from MF, had it on order from before the latest price increase, and they didn't raise it on me. So I think I'm good.
crunchee Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Anybody here ever actually won one of these fancy-pants auctions? Unless you can win or have very deep pockets, I don't even see the point in looking at 'em, unless it's for research. The last auction I actively looked up online was this one, to find out the details without looking for a reference book...and even then the auction was long over with: https://www.julienslive.com/lot-details/index/catalog/71/lot/27930

I doubt any of the above issues exist but at the same time I'm not in danger of buying it.
Tortious Posted July 16, 2022 Posted July 16, 2022 The Explorer is up to $4k with a day to go. Dave Scepter, you all in? 🤩 🤑 Amazingly, this gem is languishing at $925.
