beezerboy Posted October 27, 2023 Posted October 27, 2023 thought of a couple more no factor types, but there was one Gibson as well. sad story from about 20 years ago now. the guitar was a 1941 (J35 I think) that was purchased by my friend's father in the mid 40s. he got it from a pawn shop and paid "on time"... like 5 - 10 dollars a week when he got his paycheck. total cost was something like $60 or something. don't remember but..... he had the receipts in the original case. dad had glued the Players cigarette guy (the sailor) on to the headstock in the 40s. anyway, it was handed down to my friend. he didn't play, but he made me and my brothers play it once in a while at get togethers. it was fabulous. easy to play, great sound,,,, one of those guitars that just becomes part of you once get going on it. magic. anyway, one day he and the wife get into it.... she's pissed and kicks the guitar! foot right through the top side. next day he brings it to me.... "here... its yours.... I was gonna toss it..... do what you want". do, I fixed it... took a couple weeks because there were a lot of pieces. it was missing a piece about 3/8" wide and an inch long. I dug through my Constatine's "50 Woods of the World" sample box I'd had for about 40 years and found a mahogany that was a perfect grain match and I made the final piece. then matched the original finish. I am a professional mechanic and machinist (for 46 years now).. this was the best fix I have ever done, on anytIhing. you could barely tell it had been damaged, much less that a fat girl would have had her whole foot inside the guitar. I eventually gave it back because it was a family heirloom. I regret that because, through chicanery and deceit, it ended up in the hands of someone that really did not deserve it, but thats another story. no good deed goes unpunished just the guy in the circle::

Jon C Posted October 27, 2023 Posted October 27, 2023 Wow, gotta think about that. I own a bunch and have only sold one. It was a 1960's era Japanese Kent violin bass, sunburst. Probably sold it for $50 to a kid in high school. I see them occasionally on Reverb at $600 plus. Lots of Strats, Hamers, Gibsons, Carvins, Ibenez, odd balls.
