Guitar Stores in New York?

Recommended Posts

I've got to blast through Manhattan New York mid week and was wondering where all the cool guitar stores are now?

Can anyone recommend a few places? At one time a whole bunch were all down one street, but that was ages ago... 42nd or Canal?

Thanx for any and all help.

48th Street.

48th Street is now just Sam Ash and Rudy's. I always recommend 30th Street Guitars over those places. Guitar Center on 14th is also worth checking out for their vintage pieces, strangely enough.

If you've got the time, head over to Staten Island and check Mandolin Brothers. I was lucky enough to go there this past Saturday for my first time, and let me tell you, you will want at least a couple of hours to spend there. They have an amazing collection of acoustics, including vintage Martin's and Gibsons, and let you play anything you want. I played a 1935 Martin 00-40 that blew me away. A 1953 Gibson J-45 with the nicest tone. Also have a bunch of nice electrics as well. They carry gibson, fender, gretsh, prs and collings. And not to be left out, a very nice selection of semi-hollow and hollow bodied guitars as well. A bit of a truck but a must see music store for sure, one of the greats.

It doesn't look like anyone goes to New York anymore... are the rats, cockroaches and bed bugs THAT bad?

Naw - people can live with the vermin. The rents are just insane!

We prefer to think of it as living closer to nature.

I used to LOVE the Manhattan guitar shops. I'd go there just to browse. Now, I'm not a fan of any of them. I do like to visit Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island though.

The best stores are 30th Street Guitars & Ludlow Guitars. Ludlow guitars actually sells new Hamer models.

Wow, that's news to me! I see they have a nice plain Jane Studio in stock. It's not much, but it's a start.

There is also the store Guitar Man that is now located on East 7th Street that sells mainly Suhr, Reverand and

G&L guitars.

I have nothing nice to say about 30th Street. Go there to look, but buy at your own peril. They screwed me over years ago badly and were swapping parts off of vintage guitars. Fukk 'em. Lying, cheating sacks of shit worse than just about anyone I've dealt with in the guitar business. I give them "Ed Roman Class" distinction.

Last time I visited 30th street I saw some interesting things, but the vibe I got there made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Like a good dog, I pay attention to my instincts. I looked and left. They may be just fine, but Serial's experience will keep me on my guard.

Sorry to hear about that. I have bought and sold several guitars from them over the years without incident.

Yeah, sucks to hear that. Ariana and I had a very pleasant experience at the shop back in '04 or '05.

I just typed a long recitation of what those assholes did with me and had a sip of Irish Whiskey, felt better and deleted it.

Suffice it to say that I would never trust bums like that in a business like vintage guitars.

Well, the important thing is that you now feel better!
